Theme and Character Analysis : The Great Gatsby Theme : There are many themes that run through this book. The major theme is to show that audience that flaw of “The American Dream”. The American Dream is a system of beliefs, during that 1920s, people believed that anyone could achieve wealth through hard work and success and that everyone has an equal opportunity to achieve this wealth. Of course this belief isn’t ideal. One example is how Tom Buchanan was born into his wealth. It isn’t equal opportunity if one person doesn’t even have to work up to their money and achieves wealth by just being born. Daisy Buchanan married into wealth. She didn’t have to work a penny in her life. She achieved wealth by just being pretty. However if Daisy wasn’t as pretty then Tom would of never married her, which links to another theme. Jay Gatsby achieved wealth through illegal business. During 1920s there was Prohibition, meaning that alcohol was illegal. However his parties would have an abundance of alcohol. Gatsby would pay the police enough to look the other way. There isn’t really any equal opportunity if the only way that Gatsby could achieve wealth would be through illegal business. Although Gatsby did achieve The American Dream, he wasn’t happy, because he didn’t have love, which for him was Daisy. Gatsby achieved the American Dream but he ended up dead. Going back to what has been mentioned earlier, The only reason that Tom and Gatsby were even interested in Daisy was because of the idea of her. They only reason that they were even interested in her was because of her beauty. This is the reason why the song “Will You Still Love Me When I Am No Longer Young And Beautiful” was in the movie.
