The Effects of Having Children Families are essential factors that affect the quality of our lives, how we act and how we think. Moreover, people without children often wonder what life would be with children. One thing for sure is that people’s lives are very different without having children. Therefore, children can influence parents in their work performance, responsibilities, and happiness. First of all, one important effect of having children is work performance. Caring for their children takes a lot of time and energy. For example, the parents have to make breakfast, drop their kids off at school in the morning, pick them up in the afternoon, prepare dinner, and help with homework. All of these take time and make it hard for parents to focus and devote their time at work. When children have some problems such as getting sick, parents are always worried and their energy is greatly affected. It is hard to do well at work. With children at home, it is hard to work long hours at work or to travel far from home if work demands. There are many things that the parents usually could do before having children such as working overtime, having two jobs, and working third shifts. Also, the parents need more time to get a degree and get promoted at work or do better at school. These things are easier accomplished if people do not have to care for their children at home. Secondly, having children helps people become more responsible. Having children means they need to manage their time, money, behavior, and commitment differently. They have to consider the effects on not only their lives but also on their children’s lives. For example, if a promotion at work requires the mom or the dad to move to Alaska, then the children have to move.
