The Conservative Party, originally known as the Tory Party, is the oldest political party to date and first began making an impact in the United Kingdom in the late 18th century. Since then, this party has had its highs and lows as a party. The downfalls are a direct result of inner conflicts. One issue involves protectionism versus free trade and the other concerns the party's different stances on conservatism tradition. The controversy split the party into those in favor of the 'one nation' conservatism and those who followed the new radical approach started by Margaret Thatcher in the 1970s. However, even with these setbacks, the Conservative Party has always been able to adapt and that has led to its success. Behind many leaders, the Conservatives have frequently led the process of change in national politics. Prior to the Tories coming into power, the Whigs were in control. Though, in 1783 William Pitt the Younger came into power as he was elected prime minister. He would help define the role of Prime Minister as he would accomplish and endure a great deal throughout his twenty-one years. Pitt wanted to bring change to Britain’s economy and was inspired by Adam Smith. Smith is considered the father of modern economics and capitalism (Crowley & Sobel, 2010). Pitt wanted to make Smith's logic a part of the Party and was successful. He was able to open up free trade and lay the foundation for modern prosperity. In addition, he was able to pay off the majority of government’s debt that accumulated and reshaped the tax system for the better. While he was organizing Britain’s market the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars occurred subsequently. He was obviously bright, but he was able to lead as well.
