Colorado has always been known for its beautiful landscape, lively wildlife, and now, its history-making violent sprees. The first massacre known to exist in Colorado was the Sand Creek massacre, in which a 90-day militia killed somewhere around 200 people of the village of Cheyenne and Arapaho. Since then, the state of Colorado has kept mainly quiet and peaceful, with the exception of the Columbine School shooting, and now, this movie theatre shooting in Aurora. Writer for Time Magazine, Christopher J. Ferguson writes to argue that although the shooting happened during the midnight release of a violent movie, “we are focusing too much on superficial detail” (Ferguson 1). In each game you shoot, stab and beat people to death, with the main goal in some of them is to get as many “kills” as possible. The army is even beginning to come out with video games for their enlistees to train with so they are ready for real combat. This is allowing children to see that it’s okay to do these things in video games, which begs the question, if they can do it in their game, why can’t they do it in real life? It doesn’t even need to be an incredibly violent video game for it to spark some sort of violence. Many people we call “gamers” tend to get so involved in their games, that they begin to get aggravated and irritated when things don’t go the way they want it to. For example, when I was in high school, we had an incident in the library involving two students who were playing video games on the school computers. They were playing World of Warcraft, which isn’t incredibly violent, but does have some graphic material in it, and one student kept losing. He then became overly angry and stabbed the other student who kept beating him in the hand with a pencil. If this is the type of violence that can be expected from games that are not known for being particularly violent, then what can we expect from those that are more graphic? Now, video games are not the only thing that can be blamed for violence, movies can be blamed as well; however, movies are a little easier to keep our kids from
