Fear Envelopes Our Dreams Afflicted with a recurring dream of lost treasure, a young boy unknowingly sets forth on a journey of dire straits and great disillusion. Upon the meeting of a strange old king, Santiago’s unremarkable life takes a turn for the extraordinary. Met with the warnings of danger lurking in every decision, he is also met with the unwavering feeling that his trek is now something he must endure to find meaning in life. In The Alchemist, Coelho uses symbolism and strong internal conflict to relate how fear can prove useful as a tool for motivation but quickly turns lethal in the in the pursuit of dreams. Using the symbols of the gypsy, the wisdom of the king, and the vastness of an unknown and unforgiving land, Coelho demonstrates how fear is a strong power that must be confronted in order to move forward in life. Before his journey to Africa, Santiago experienced only a paranoid fear of the unknown. After being plagued with a recurring dream, the boy sought help in the form of a dream interpreter in the nearby town. He soon had to come to terms with what his mind told him and what his heart made him do. The only dream interpreter in the town was an old gypsy. He did not want to trust the old women because ever since childhood, “[he] had always been frightened to death that he would be captured by gypsies” (12), and now that he must endure a state of vulnerability for her, “[his] childhood fear returned”. Here, Coelho shows how Santiago’s past now interferes with his current reality through the vessel of an old gypsy, who are commonly known for their connection to all things mysterious and powerful. In doing so, it solidifies the notion that unquestioned fear is far more damaging in the sense that since it is hard to recognize in one’s self, it is much harder to get rid of.
