Jeanette Straathof Straathof1 ENG 3P Ms. Windle November 29, 2011 That was Then, This is Now. Many of the characters in the novel learn life lessons and change because of them. An example of character change is Bryon, from Hinton’s novel, That was Then, This is Now. At first, Bryon shows he is conceited and thinks highly of himself. Also, Bryon exhibits a bad attitude and a hot temper. However, Bryon is very moral and he knows right from wrong. Next, Bryon shows that he is responsible and a hard worker. In addition, instead of his temper, Bryon develops a caring side. Finally, Bryon proves that he learns a life lesson when he shows compassion to others. Therefore, it is evident that Bryon, from the novel, That was Then, This is Now changes throughout the book. In the novel That was Then, This is Now, Bryon thinks very highly of himself. “I had a rep as a lady killer- a hustler; I kept up the old Lady Bryon, tradition one way” (Hinton17). This shows Bryon thinks very highly of himself because he thinks that he is all of everything a girl is looking for; the good looks, or even personality. He also thinks he is tough and could win every fight he fought. Therefore, Bryon thinks very highly of himself. Bryon is very lost, confused and sometimes even upset near the end of the book, as a teenager these kinds of moods can lead to many things. “I don’t even care about Mark. The guy who was my best friend doesn’t even exist no longer” (Hinton153). This is an example from the book because when Bryon calls the police on Mark because Bryon found out that Mark was selling pills, Bryon loses his best friend, “brother”, team mate and he is so confused with himself, he doesn’t know who he is anymore, or who his friends are.
