“All warfare is based on deception” (I). Sun Tzu’s The Art of War set the table for all future warfare. Sun Tzu lived around 500-550 B.C. in the Qiu state. He was a well known and feared general: his tactics would drive an enemy to insanity (I). He was a very well known writer in his time, he is still well known now (I). Some people believed him to be some sort of philosopher (I). Sun Tzu said many types of quotes in his book, some about life and death, happiness and despair, and Ying and Yang (B). Sun Tzu wrote many books, they were mainly written on thin bamboo leaves that he preserved with tree sap (A). King Chien of the Qiu state heard of him and wanted him to command his army (A). Sun Tzu was forced and black mailed into teaching King Chien’s men the rules of war (A). Sun Tzu suggested that he train a group of 150 women first to show King Chien his way of efficiency(A). Two of King Chien’s loyal servants had not made Sun Tzu’s expectations and he had requested the they be beheaded (A). King Chien was warned by his head cooking who was in the Court yard tending to the women (A). King Chine demanded Sun Tzu to explain why he had wanted to behead his most loyal of servants. Sun Tzu explained that if a mistake had happened on the field of battle, they would have gotten killed or captured making the rest of the troops vulnerable to that position (A). King Chien decided that Sun Tzu had made an excellent point and demanded his guards to execute the two women immediately (A). after a month or so, King Chien was impressed by the results of the women’s training and wanted Sun Tzu to be the general of his army and train his men (A). Sun Tzu was the most ruthless man during the time of the warring states: He took no prisoners and left no survivors (A). If one of his men didn’t kill a certain number of enemy soldiers, they would be executed and left in a shallow grave
