Especially in the United States, believe it or not, countless people die every year related to guns. “Approximately 20,000 persons are murdered in the United States each year…60 percent of homicides each year involve firearms.” (Sloan. et al. 302-303) It has become a drastic debate—should gun laws in the United States be stricter? The advocates of gun control attribute the high rate of homicide in the United States to loose gun restrictions, while the opponents always use the Second Amendment which protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Even though the United States already has diverse gun laws through different states, gun laws should be stricter to reduce the high rate of homicide and accidental deaths related to guns and to prevent legal loopholes. It is a fact that America has ranked high both in the rate of homicide and the ownership of gun among the world. Meanwhile, the crime rate is also higher than other countries. It is unfair to simply compare two countries’ gun ownership and homicides rate, because there are many potentially confounding factors that affect the result in different countries. However, in the essay“Handgun Regulations, Crime, Assaults, and Homicide: A Tale of Two Cities”, Drs. J. H. Sloan, and others studied two cities: Seattle, Washington, and Vancouver, British Columbia.
