Eddie felt humiliated about where she was raised, she didn't want to be associated with the "scandals" that belonged to the shacks north of the creek. She believed that, since she grew up in the shacks, she was worth less than the next person. Edith was embarrassed by her drunken father, even though none of his actions were ever her fault. Her mother, a "hallelujah-shouting fool" who preached, but never actually went to church, was also a huge contributor to the way Eddie felt. With people tormenting her about her cousins who were teen moms, or her father who made a fool of his drunken self in public, the poor girl felt like nothing more than dirt, and she wanted to be thought of as flawless and beautiful.
In this story Panttaja says it is both mothers that are wicked. Panttaja states the real mother “plots and schemes, and she wins” (Panttaja 660) when it comes to fulfilling the wishes of Ashputtle. But actually the two mothers have the same goal in mind; to have their daughters married off and have a joyful life. To be able to do this, the real mother puts a charm on the prince to make him fall in love with Ashputtle instead of anyone else. The prince did not dance with anyone else all night and would always say “she is my partner” (Grimm 630).
When Evyn first saw Eleni, with her red lipstick, black pants, and high heels, she thought Eleni looked nothing like a college professor and a mother. Evyn made the assumption that she went partying every night. That is an example of her being judgemental. After her father, Birdie, reminded Evyn that her new combination lock was 5, 10, 15; she forgot, making her forgetful. An example of Evyn being unintelligent was when her so-called friends, Andrea’s group, calls her Evelyn and doesn’t talk to her unless it’s to ask about updates with Ajax, she doesn’t realize that they’re just using her.

Even more revealing, Rosaura walks into Senora Ines’ house “with a firm step” (10) as if she was equal to all the people attending the party, but obviously she was not. Because Rosaura is ignorant about the social classes, or at least that she cannot move up the social class as easily as she believes. Therefore, unconsciously it makes her do questionable actions; for example, when “ she kick[s] [the girl with the bow’s] shin” (12) to further prove her point that she refuses to be different (social speaking) then anyone else attending the party. To summarize Rosaura is seen as a person who is so blinded by what she thinks is given to her by going to the party. She perceives herself as having a

Mrs. Lennox is described as a famously beautiful, elegant woman, who does nothing but attend fashionable parties. Though everyone is acquainted with and admires Mrs. Lennox, nearly no one knows that she has a little girl, so totally is the embarrassingly ugly child kept from public view. As the servants are obliged to give Mary whatever she wants (lest her parents be disturbed by her crying), Mary becomes terribly spoiled, selfish, and dictatorial. She loves no one, and no one cares at all for her. This already unhappy state of affairs is made worse when a cholera epidemic breaks out in the Indian village where the Lennoxes are living.
