One of the most successful businesses in the past twenty years is Starbucks Coffee Company. In this assignment I intend to examine the organizational structure of Starbucks Coffee Company, with an emphasis on Job description and Job Specification for a Starbucks employee. I will also try to determine the form of departmentalization that should be used, as well as whether centralization or decentralization of power should be used in light of the recent financial struggles they’ve had. Lastly, I will attempt to determine which organizational configuration best fits Starbucks. According to the textbook, a job description is “a formal list of tasks and duties that is used in two main ways. First, job descriptions are part of the recruiting process that allows applicants to review what exactly a job entails by reading the job description. Second, job descriptions often appear in a company manual, handbook, or on an organizational Web site. Managers and employees can then refer to the listing to see which employee is responsible for any given task.” (Reilly, Minnick, & Baack, 2011) With that in mind, here is my version of a Starbucks Barista job description: Starbucks Barista Job Description: Do you love coffee? Do you like to help people? At Starbucks, we strive to provide a much needed service in today’s world. Many people feel like they need a good cup of coffee to start their day, or just love a good cup of coffee whatever time of day! At Starbucks, you’ll learn about different coffees and develop great teamwork skills that not only apply to your employment here, but possibly to other jobs you may attain in your future. Key Responsibilities: • Develop a working knowledge of all products we offer. • Maintain a good rapport with your coworkers and managers, and always strive to provide the best service to our customers. • Keep a clean working environment.
