“Song of the Open Road”
“Song of the Open Road” by Walt Whitman is a poem that has made me open up my eyes and given me a greater insight into my life and especially the world around me. It has made me realize that things in this world don’t always go the way I want them to. And in order to make situations a little bit better for myself, I have to be the one responsible to look at the brighter side of everything on every journey I take. The poem describes many hardships that humans go through and experience in their lives. Whitman explains that we have the choice either to; except all the bad things in the world and move on in order to pursue happiness, or to never move past an awful experience and live a terrible life. But, if a majority of the human beings on Earth today worked toward this goal, then people would be more understanding, and more open/kind to new possibilities. Although, I know this is hoping for too much, but I can gradually see small changes in what people do and say in the modern world. Even the little things count, and could make someone’s whole day. Walt Whitman is expressing in his poem that one day all humans can be on the same path, through all the imagery of nature, and using uplifting key words while listing human hardships. He is saying that we all go through the same journeys as each other, and every single one of us experiences something that is devastating. We are all alike in some way, shape, or form. Might as well help each other out and be kind along the way, instead of treating each other unequally even
