Although the drug soma is used to keep everyone happy and prevents rebellion, the State should not take away family, love and most importantly take way their free will. In the book Brave New World, the subject universal happiness comes into play throughout the story. The State thinks that in order to maintain its stability, they make sure that all its citizens get exactly what they want all the time. In other words, the State is designed to make people happy. According to Tom Stewart, this universal "happiness" is achieved in three ways: “The first is, the State uses biological science and psychological conditioning to make sure that each citizen is not only suited to its job but actually prefers that role to anything else. Secondly, through the promotion of promiscuous sex as virtuous and the elimination of families or any long-term relationship of any sort, the government ensures that no one will ever face emotional or sexual desire. Lastly, whatever sadness slips through the cracks can be brushed away by using soma, a drug with no side-effects that gives the user a pleasant high and makes all worries dissolve away. All this keeps everyone in the State from rebellion,” (Tom Stewart, 7-9). The State wants to keep everyone against rebellion, but by doing the things above they also take away their individuality. Juan Pablo said, “A gramme is always better than a damn,” “A gramme in time saves nine,” in his article about Brave New World (Juan Pablo, 1). These quotes say that by taking the drug lets you forget all your worries. In reality we call that drug abuse. Drug addicts use different substances to escape the harsh reality of truth. Living without the drugs seems unimaginable and frightening in both worlds. Soma can be nice to have all your worries drift away, but I don’t agree with it taking all of your feelings
