The disease prevention and treatments were patriarchal in which masculine force was used to evict disease out of body (Robinson, 2004). An example- (any) mental illness was treated using force (beating, fire etc) because they considered mind and body as separate (dualistic), did not have the understanding that changes in electrolytes/toxins or social factors could causes mental illness. Contemporary Health Promotion is based on health literacy - making people aware of the causative factors for diseases, how to prevent illness and value of health by reinforcing quality of life. Health is redefined as the manner in which we live well, irrespective of our inescapable illness, trauma, or disabilities. The new science view human beings as living things (organic), holistic (not broken down) interconnected (social, emotional, spiritual, and physical factors), and feminine values of nurturing, compassion and trust ( Egalitarian) are used in treatment (Robinson, 2004).
However, the citizens wanted to make their own rules to follow, sensible and understandable rules. Further on Paine explains “the sun will never shine on a cause of greater worth?” I think that Paine is saying that it is such an issue that we should look to reform it in any way so that it is more fair to all citizens. The struggle of having a King or a Monarchy for the people at that time was difficult. The community wanted a more fair and equal government, while the king was not giving that to them. Let’s take for instance when Paine refers to the past writings of another author, Mr. Pelham “they will last my time.” The name of ancestors will be remembered for their great deeds by future generations with destinies of their own.
These warnings are relevant to today’s society because technology and media are changing the way we look at human feelings and rights, trying to avoid a society where people are not so much denied human rights such as free speech and expression but conditioned to not care. Other than the obvious Utopian references of a perfect society and everything being happy go lucky and on-the-surface and the themes of conditioning and prejudism, what else is there to "the Brave New World"? Family plays no role what so ever in Brave New World. No mother or fathers. Babies are born with no family.
Abuses by the sovereign power are acceptable as long as it maintains peace within the society. According to Thomas Hobbes, the sovereign power has control over judicial, military and civil matters. Because the subjects of the civil society gave up their freedom of decision in order for the sovereign power to act for them, the individuals cannot break the contract between them and the sovereign, based on the actions that he undertakes in order to maintain peace within the society, but if the sovereign does not act with this principle as its goal, the subjects are allowed to break the social contract and seek the guidance of another sovereign power. The sovereign power is above the common law, as it is him that creates it and can simply change it at his will. He cannot be arrested or put to death by the people.
In fact, if you take prescription drugs and have no questions or concerns about them then you probably need to make yourself more aware of your personal health. Although prescription drugs are legal-with the permission of a doctor-we should all be conscious of the risks as well as the benefits that these drugs come with. Just the simple knowledge that all drugs were legal at one time should make people cautious of any mind-altering substance, and push us to make positive choices. Not only do these drugs alter our bodies while we use them, but they can completely change the way our bodies are able to function when they are no longer present. We need to make ourselves knowledgeable about all of the effects of prescription medications in order to make good decisions for our overall health because if we do not, then we are merely playing dice with our health just like the users of illegal drugs.
The drug given is called soma. Soma blocks and numbs reality and replaces it with happy hallucinations. It also blocks people’s ability to see the life they actually live, which is a form of manipulation because citizens are manipulated to take soma, which helps them live a happy and perfect lifestyle. The government also influences/encourages the citizens to take soma tablets but the amount is regulated. Since soma is taken every day the amount given is regulated so there is no such thing as overdose.
The dismal thought of forgetting moments in one’s life and not be being able to provide for oneself are unbearable for most. Although Alzheimer’s could be categorized as the equivalent of AIDS to STDs in memory loss, it is important to remember that there are other far deadlier
One thing about police officers though, is that i believe they shouldn’t be allowed to come up to you and check you, unless if they have a reason. Basically i believe everyone has the right to be safe. Thirdly, i would not give up the
Stability is the most mentioned motto throughout the novel. Stability is the ultimate goal of society because only through stability can happiness be maintained and all unpleasant feelings and emotions be eradicated. The desire for stability requires the production of large numbers of genetically identical “individuals,” because, people who are exactly the same are less likely to come into conflict. Stability means minimizing conflict, risk, and change. Brave New World also states that it creates stability by, deep thought, new ideas, and strong passions.
John or also known as The Savage really like how all the factors of positives and negatives in life which life is worth living for. This makes me think that we shouldn’t try to find the perfect life with no problems at all because this books shows us that that is not the way to take to be able to change our life for the better and be able to enjoy our lives. Instead, as how I interpreted this amazing book, we should be searching for the perfectly imperfect lives with the perfect problems that make life enjoyable or in better terms life more lifelike. I honestly feel that there is no perfect life and if it was it shouldn’t considered being alive at all. The book also shows some abnormal actions that would be considered different in our time but it is normal in that world.
