Many social aspects of life guide our actions and course of life. Friends, family, teachers, politicians are all institutions that influence the way we live and how we do it. Of course, our influences in life choices do not stop at that short list and are in fact growing as we progress as a human society. One of these influences that has gained more and more power is the role of media in our society today. With TV and internet becoming essential in both developed and developing societies the power media outlets garner is huge. The main issue with this is as the power of media keeps rising, diversity within these outlets is dying. For this essay we are asked to look at a current social issue that is affecting the wellbeing of our society. This essay will focus on the consolidation of media in North American society and the many social problems that come with it. From 1980 to now, media has become so concentrated that only a handful of corporations control the majority of media outlets in the world. North America is most plagued by this as the continent has seen its news division of media turn into a bias propaganda machine that lets profit come before journalistic integrity. Fair and accurate news is something that does not exist within mainstream news reporting anymore and it is a cause for social concern. Using the conflict perspective, and a couple filters from the propaganda model we will analyze the problems created by the concentration of news media. The main argument in this paper is the rapid concentration of media in North America has negatively influenced and affected society in a number of social ways. The essay will implore the conflict perspective to outline these social injustices and will further add to the notion of elite rule.
