The dominance and power of the west is affecting cultures. Bagdikian states that in 2004 only 7 corporations owned all the media from approximately 50 in 1983. This concentration of the media brings limited views and benefits capitalism as people will only be influenced in a certain way as news is a social construction to benefit the capitalist state. (McQuail) Cultural hegemony is the result of this. It is therefore threatening the cultural identities of many countries because this one culture is being largely promoted due to the dominance of the western media and media imperialism.
The obvious downside to the medias role in our political endeavors, is the continuos bias that it portrays, the high cost to run any sort of political or public directive, and that they simply operate under the initiative of profit. The amount of money required to reach citizens with political messages has spiraled upward and now dominates political campaigns. Television formats favor short, emotional appeals over reasoned, thoughtful debate. Typical claims of liberal or conservative bias are most often in the eyes of the beholder, however the levels of managed news, spin and journalistic punditry feed these perceptions of bias in the news. As a result, the deeper biases reflected in sensationalism often leave citizens confused about issues which forces them to deconstruct this alternately managed and frenzied news in order to make sound judgements about their society and government.

It seems the media is growing more powerful with time which is, in my opinion, both good and bad. The media takes full advantage of their first amendment right and the freedom of the press. The media has three main roles and responsibilities to the American public, which I will cover in detail. I will explain how these responsibilities fit in with my current events project on our economy. Our politicians have a great influence over what the media reports as well.

Although the creation of media has given us great power and knowledge, we see its consequences in our personal lives and in society as a whole. Often, people are against increased immigration as a result of the influence of your opinion in government and society, creating an “anti-immigrant feeling” that has spread throughout the world and created “patterns of discrimination and criminalization” (Anderson). This has caused much of the blame for a poor economy or society to be put upon immigrants, whether it is their fault or not (Anderson). John Isbister, professor at Princeton University, is an excellent example of the portion of American citizens that carry such a mindset. He states that having too many immigrants lowers the standard of living because the increase in population creates an inverse relationship to the output per person. In addition, he states that some immigrants create a fiscal burden on local governments by using more city resources than they contribute to in revenue.
Democracy slowly disappears when decisions are carried out mostly by corporate and managerial elite- says Buchanan. Decisions are to the benefit of its people; elites can only control society up to a point. Even with this basic control over society, it is hard to send undocumented people back to their countries of origin when they have been living in that land for many generations; in other words, they have become Americans. It seems as if citizens have discovered the 1%, or America’s richest individuals. Some have dismissed these reports as inflated statistics, greatly exaggerated and that an individual cannot own that much money. In reality, America is very much controlled by a wealthy elite, as explained by Mike Lofgren in his article “Revolt of the Rich”. Lofgren proposes that the wealthy elite in America are transitioning into separating themselves from the common population.
Blacks during the early 1900’s had to with stand segregation and discrimination in the United States. Imperialism is wrong and not beneficial for the smaller countries. A majority of the top superpowers of the world use imperialism to generate money for their country. The want to deplete the smaller countries of their cash crop for their own selfish wants and needs. The superpowers believe that the more land you have the more power or influence you will have.
