ENC 1101 Ellijay vs. Jacksonville Ellijay, Georgia --population of 1,637—is the definition of a small town. The difference between the largest city in the United States, Jacksonville, and a small town like Ellijay is the pace of each city. Going to see dirt track races up where most people are dressed in camo and the most exciting thing they have done all day is make a trip to the convenience store is definitely an experience. Ellijay’s population consists mainly of people who hunt and fish on the weekends, and not spend time on the phone or at the mall. Ellijay has giant oak trees that hang over the couple roads that make up the town. Tucked up into the mountains, the little city has more apples than anyone could count. Ellijay was founded because of the apple orchards that make up more than half of the town while Jacksonville is known for its’ mandarin oranges. Although both towns take pride in their history, Ellijay makes it a point every year to have an annual apple picking festival. The town all comes together and plays games and celebrates the growth of the town since it was founded. Bigger cities seem to struggle more with this part because of the large variety of people who live in the city. In Ellijay, most people like the same things, but in large cities such as Jacksonville, it is harder to create a festival that everyone would support and enjoy at the same time. Every second your back is turned is an opportunity to be taken advantage of. There are a higher number of criminals in the bigger cities compared to towns like Ellijay. A sense of security is well-known in the town and there are more people looking to help you with something than to take advantage of you. Around every corner in Jacksonville, there seems to be a police car looking to bust someone for something, but small towns’ crime rates are significantly lower not only because there are fewer people, but because the sense of security is higher and no one feels the need to commit a crime. Stealing is almost unheard of in Ellijay, the townspeople know that growth only happens when everyone plays their part. In contrast, people in Jacksonville are always trying to get something for free or take it from the next
