His presidency, from August 1948 to April 1960, remains controversial, affected by Cold War tensions on the Korean peninsula and elsewhere. Containment- Containment was a policy created by Harry Truman during the beginning of the Cold War, it was made to stop the spread of communism. This policy was set forth after the Soviet Union made an attempt to spread communism in Eastern Europe, China, Korea, Africa, and Vietnam. Truman made a speech, known as the Truman Doctrine, which was a US policy to stop the Soviet Union from spreading. Truman pledged to contain communism in Europe and elsewhere and that US would support any nation with both military and economic aid, in prevention of their stability being challenged by the spread of communism. Containment led to the establishment of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization
During the 1950’s and 1960’s the Soviet Unions satellite states established the Brezhnev doctrine. The Brezhnev Doctrine was established because of the Soviet Union’s ability to maintain such governmental control over Eastern Europe. An intervention of such domestic affairs with military power provided the Soviet Union a unique Political power. Surprisingly by the 1970’s the Soviet Union and the United States of Americas formed a treaty agreement to reduce the nuclear missiles both possessed. Nuclear missiles were the reasons such turmoil was established between the Soviet Union and other nations.
In February 1945 at the Yalta Conference which involved the “Big Three” displayed the highpoint of an inter-allied cooperation. The conference represented Joseph Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill’s productivity with committing to dealing with a lasting consensus of international relations. Although, they agreed on key decisions such as the division of Germany, the ratification of the United Nations, USSR gaining lands in Poland as well as the agreement of the Declaration of a Liberated Europe, there were cracks in the constructed agreements. You can’t forget the Washington conference when the US, Japan, Italy, and France all scraped their battleships and agreed not to build anymore for 10 years. The Kellogg-Briand Pact, sixty-two countries signed this agreement to always settle disputes peacefully. The London Naval Conference placed limits on the building of submarines, cruisers and destroyers. There are many reasons why WWII began. The Japan invaded Manchuria which violated the League of Nations and the Kellogg-Briand Pact.

The Egyptian president, Nasser, with the influence from the USSR, nationalized the canal in July of 1956. Immediately Britain and France planned an attack and helped Israel by sending troops down through the Suez Canal with them. Russia backed Nasser up with weapons and equipment and encouraged Nasser to protect the Suez.
