Significance of Exploration Christopher Columbus is a very important person in our country's history. He found the "New World," the one we live in today. Columbus was a noble man with unparalleled intentions. He was an Italian explorer and navigator who sailed west across the Altantic Ocean in search for the all-water route to Asia. Columbus’s courage and curiosity sparked the movement of exploration. Christopher Columbus discovered the continent of North America, doubling the size of the World as it was known, and overturning the notion that the world was flat. If it weren't for Columbus's discovery of the "New World" we would not have found America when he did. By discovering the Americas, Columbus opened up the region for colonization and exploitation by Europeans. All the cultures were technologically stuck in the Stone Age,and ,combined with their lack of immunity to European diseases meant that these civilizations were overrun and conquered by Europeans. Columbus proved to the Europeans that the world was likely round and not flat. He didn't really prove that it was round, but his voyages increased the perceived likelihood that it was, and inspired other explorers who really did demonstrate that you could head west and end up east. That increased global trade significantly. It also increased global awareness of the other cultures that share this planet. Christopher Columbus left a legacy behind. Columbus is admired in areas around the world, but mostly in the Americas with his name on places. Such as the District of Columbia and the celebration of Columbus Day every
