Should the Time Students Spend in School Be Extended?

Walk into any high school and you will see dozens of posters and announcements on school clubs, sports, and class officers. In the last few years, the participation of students in extra-curricular activities has skyrocketed. One of my classmates, also class president of Felix Varela has been a part of over 10 clubs and 3 sports throughout her high school years. As a high school student, I know what it is like to actively be a part of numerous school activities but still have time to manage my grades and even spend time with my family. Most children who attend public and private schools in the U.S. spend between 175 to 185 days in the classroom a year and an average of seven hours a day. Although, I was aware of other countries that had longer days of school, I had little knowledge about the effect longer days of school had on society. For this research project, I decided to pursue the question, should the time students spend in school be extended? This question deserves to be examined because this affects the community as a whole and in order to make the right decision the pros and cons on this issue must be analyzed. Before I could focus on the advantages or disadvantages of extending school, I first needed to do some research on what other students do after school hours. I started by reading an article, “Facts about after school programs & at risk youth” from an after school program website, to give me a basic understanding about the youth. I learned that the majority of students do not go home right after school. Students are engaged in sports, clubs, academic activities, volunteer work, arts, and religious activities. These activities offer opportunities for students to learn the values of teamwork, individual and group responsibility, physical strength and endurance, competition, diversity, and a sense of culture and community.
