Should Surveillance Cameras Be Used In Public Places? Shops like Macy’s and Sears now have surveillance cameras. Everywhere you look there will be a camera looking right back at you. Many people worry about the use of cameras in public places like parking lots, stores, parks, and highways. They don’t like being watched. They wonder if the footage can be used against them. But how? If you aren’t doing anything wrong, there’s nothing to worry about. Surveillance cameras should be used because they can save lives, stop crimes, or even help us with less critical situations. A couple years ago, the nation was gripped with the horrifying news that a baby had been stolen from a car, while the mother was returning a shopping a cart a few feet away. Fortunately, the kidnapper’s face was identified by surveillance cameras in the parking lot and broadcast over radios, and television. The kidnapper was quickly identified and caught. The baby was returned, unharmed, to her mother. The kidnapper later admitted that she was going to kill the baby. Had it not been for those cameras that baby girl would have never been seen again. There’s not a better argument. Surveillance cameras saved that baby’s life. Or what about that attempted murder outside CVS two years ago? Security viewing the footage saw a man holding off an attacker who was armed with a knife. If there was no cameras that man would be dead, and no-one could be charged for the murder. Those cameras saved his life too. There’s many more examples of people who got saved because of surveillance cameras. Surveillance cameras can provide two important uses in crime. One, they can catch criminals. For example, if someone shoplifts from Target, surveillance cameras can quickly identify the suspect, and lead to the arrest of the shoplifter.
