In the 16th chapter of Dracula by Bram Stoker, the count has made his first victim in England, Lucy having been transformed into a vampire. Van Helsing, Dr. Seward, Arthur, and Quincey Morris investigate on the situation and decide to get rid of her, or rather of it...Indeed the young women has become monstruous and has started to attack children for their blood. The passage we have to analyse is the ritual the men have to perform to eliminate the creature, described through Seward's point of view. Many traditional characteristics of vampires are, like in the whole book, present in the text: blood, sharp teeth, stakes and garlic...Different recurrent themes of Stoker's work can also be found in this passage, and we will try to identify them and analyse their meaning.
He believes in doing the right thing. However, under the influence of Dracula, he is a whole other person. He is vulnerable to Dracula’s will, making him unable to control his actions. unanimous voices mention television shows such as "The Walking Dead" to movies such as "Dawn of the Dead" The descriptive details of undead hoards of brain eating creatures and sexually alluring men in the darkness of the night, sucking the blood of innocent women are common place. The modern views of these creatures are very similar. Both are known to be 'undead' which is defined as "technically dead but still animated" in the Oxford's Dictionary. Both creatures are driven by a instinctive hunger for sustenance from living victims. But surely this cannot be all there is to them.
You belong then to my enemy – to him towards whom I have sworn eternal revenge; you shall be my first victim.” He then takes a picture of Caroline Frankenstein that he finds on William. When Dracula bites certain victims such as when he attacks Lucy and Mina, it symbolizes him having a sexual interaction with these two women. To stand out, however, this form of “sex” is only for his own personal needs and only cares about getting his blood or as represented by Stoker, is only in care for having “sex” with these two women. Lastly, this symbolizes Dracula as crafty and needing as when Lucy and Mina are given blood transfusions, Dracula only cares for himself and when the time is right, sneaks in and takes in the blood for him as with the three lady vampires that worked under him. For the group of Arthur, Dr. Jack, Van Helsing, and Quincey blood also represents a form of “sex” but not as abrupt as with Dracula. When the group does the blood transfusion, it represents the bond between these characters as if they were married to Lucy.
Lucy bends her head inviting Dracula to her room; Dracula makes love to her. Ultimately, this betrayal will lead to Lucy’s death because Dracula will continue to suck the life from her. In addition, when the vampiric Lucy is approached by Holmwood in her tomb, she tries to seduce him in order to get him to protect her from the others. To the men, she has become a “monster” as well, and their desire for her is manifested in their obsession with destroying
