There are a number of strengths and limitations of using unstructured interviews to study pupil subcultures. Pupils may be in articulate or reluctant to talk, so unstructured interviews give them time and space along with encouragement to work out their responses. However, younger pupils have a shorter attention span so they may find long unstructured interviews too demanding as they can be quite time consuming. They can take several hours each and pupils are restrained to their timetable. There is also the need for training and the interviewer needs to have a background into education increasing the cost.
Children who have well educated parents listen to complex language with larger vocabularies and are read to more often. They then attend school more ready to learn. Students from less literate homes will learn more from better teachers than from worse teachers. But will they will not achieve, on average, as much as children from more literate homes. The effects of the achievement gap are that individual students do not get the education they deserve.
He compares and contrasts how his life was with the Web and without it. For example, “Just as Microsoft Word had turned me into a flesh-and-blood word processor, the Internet, I sensed, was turning me into something like a high-speed data-processing machine, a human HAL (325). The Web has changed him in such a way that he felt like a machine. He wanted to stay connected, therefore, he would yearn to check his e-mail, click links, or explore on Google. He noticed the Net was having a much stronger influence over him than his PC ever had (324).
In speaking to other ELL students whose home language is different, ELL students, use English but due to the students’ limitations in their English proficiency, they expose each other to more broken English I will value the instructional power of a word wall by frequently utilizing, maintaining, and updating it.All too often, secondary educators miss important opportunities to build the literacy skills of all students. This is especially true in
A learning disability affects the way a person learns new things in any areas of life. It affects the way they understand information and how they communicate. A learning disability means that it is harder for a child to learn, understand and communicate than it is for other children. A learning disability can be mild, moderate or severe. Some people with a mild learning disability can talk easily and look after themselves, but take a little longer than usual to learn new skills.
Sidonia Willis Mr. Lewis Engl. 1301-018 14 October 2014 The Not-So-Social Life Many social networks have created the opportunity for people to communicate almost instantly over almost any distance. Social network’s uses have become more popular and have created a whole new world of its own. The author Brian Jung’s essay “ The Negative Effects of Social Media on Society and Individuals” expresses the problems that social media is creating today. He exposes the negatives effects of online use consisting of people getting Cyber bullied, the false sense of connection people receive, and people’s lack of privacy.
Without an appropriate background, teachers can inadvertently isolate or alienate LEP students who need to feel like they are “part of the instructional setting” so a positive self-image is preserved (Carrasquillo & Rodriguez, 2001). Often, LEP students need special language programs which will supplement their learning needs fairly. Because of the rise of “immigrants and high fertility rates among linguistically and culturally diverse groups in the United States,” (Carrasquillo & Rodriguez, 2001) the number of students in need of special resources such as language development programs and better trained teachers is significant. Educators need to adapt teaching styles to fit the needs of these students because they are important of our country’s diverse
I also don’t agree with him saying cochlear implants wont work well for young children and there better off for “healthy adults.” I believe that is would probably be easier for children to learn how to use this cochlear implant as a tool because at those young ages they soak up all information they can receive, rather then adults who are sometimes stuck in their ways. I don’t know this for a fact but this is what I believe can also be a circumstance. I do agree with him saying there are a lot of risks for children but those risks can also be just as big as a risk for adults. Like in Kathryn’s article she says you need to look at the big picture and what great potential the cochlear implant can have for children or adults. I also don’t agree with what they both say about the deaf
we speak English. Nevertheless, the English language is one of the more difficult languages to learn and I can understand why many immigrants may feel overwhelmed and intimidated when faced with learning a whole new language. This is why, I believe, the U.S. should implement a required program specifically designed to aid incoming immigrants in learning English. This would especially be constructive for those entering the workforce and will absolutely have a positive effect on the future of those that complete the program. Although, at this point in time, the United States does not have a National language I still believe a helpful program should be put into action.
Students sometimes become so dependent upon technology that they are not exposed to the traditional ways of learning. Because some students might rely on technology in every area of learning, they might never experience what it is like to visit a library or read a printed textbook, especially since so many books can be purchased on audio now. Other disadvantages are that students’ handwriting skills might suffer due to a lack of practice because of their use of the computer to always write reports and essays. Always relying on the computer to find and correct errors while creating documents can result in students having very poor progress in grammar and spelling skills. Because many students also rely on the computer’s calculator, their ability to learn the proper methods of solving math problems might not be as enhanced.
