Self Confidence and Self Efficacy

The effects that self confidence and self efficacy has on sports performance. Self-confidence: self-confidence can be described as the amount of trust an individual has in their ability and sports related judgment. Self-confidence is a key part of being a successful athlete because athletes with confidence have the belief that they can achieve. An athlete who is confident is more likely to enjoy playing sports and keep setting themselves goals to achieve. There are two methods used to increase self-confidence: self talk and imagery.
 Self talk: self talk could be a running commentary in your head whilst performing which could make an athlete perform better, for example when there is a strong attack or break on for the opposite team and I am the last defender before the goalkeeper then I would be saying to myself “stay on your feet. Pressure the ball. Slow him down” and with luck others will come and support in defence preventing the worst case scenario, a goal, to occur. This will have a positive effect on performance because it means that the sports performer will always be alert and will never lose in confidence in their ability, which can only be a positive. Imagery: Is when an athlete imagines themselves performing in a specific sporting activity and pictures themselves executing the perfect technique. This will then increase their confidence because they will believe strongly in their ability and can then see the positives at the end of the tunnel be it trophies or recognition of their performance. Self-efficacy: Self-efficacy is the extent or strength of an individual belief in their own ability to complete tasks and reach goals. The difference between self-efficacy and self-confidence is that Self-efficacy refers to Confidence in a certain area.
