Erica Hills Joe Clark ENG-111-19 March 24, 2014 School is Bad for Children When I hear people say school is bad for children, I think to myself they must be kidding. Even though some people may think school is bad for children, our children need their education. In the essay “School Is Bad for Children,” the author John Holt, teacher and educational theorist, who believes that traditional schools suppress children’s curiosity about life. According to Holt, schools are killing the curiousness of the students by imposing the final truth in their mind, and he thinks students should be allowed to pursue whatever interests them. I agree with some of Holt’s criticisms, but I disagree with many of his ideas of how we should fix our schools. Holt proposes several solutions to improve education. To begin with, Holt suggests that the compulsory school attendance should be abolished. Holt argues that when something is made compulsory it develops unwillingness from the students. However, Holt is a teacher someone who provides education for children and adults. I agree with Holt when he states that the compulsory school attendance laws once served a humane and useful purpose, but today the laws help nobody. Why keep a child in school who would rather be somewhere else? That just makes learning a little harder for the children that want to learn. Holt argues, “Every teacher knows that any kid in class who, for whatever reason would rather not be there, not only doesn’t learn anything himself but makes it tougher for anyone else” (74). Secondly, Holt proceeds to suggest that the children should be taught in a natural environment. I agree with Holt, because the way the schools teach is not the best way to learn.
