Many of his students said they weren’t interested in what was being taught because it was stupid and they already knew the material. Gatto doesn’t place blame on any one party but places the blame on everyone. With this essay Gatto intends to get the proverbial wheels turning inside the readers mind by giving them a look into his own view of the educational world. He uses a host of examples to support his ideals. First, Gatto refers to a lesson his grandfather taught him at the ripe age of 7; his grandpa declared that if Gatto was bored that it was his fault and no one else’s.
Against School by John Taylor Gatto In his essay Against School, Gatto argues against the school system. He claims that the twelve year schooling program may, in fact, be pointless. He conveys his attitude toward the subject by utilizing words such as boredom, dangerous, dumbed-down—and in the context of a school—trap, warehouse, and wringer. Gatto uses straightforward logic, and argues his case by pointing out a plethora of well-educated people that stand out in history, and yet did not go through the “twelve year wringer.” Presenting himself with certainty, readers are compelled to agree with Gatto on the matter. We blindly accept that we must go through a twelve year schooling program, but Gatto asks us why this is necessary.
According to the professional ethic we are the model of our students. Mr. Moore did the opposite, he ignored Joyce wend she asked a question and he said “I see there are no question. Class dismissed” with that attitude increased the cruelty, maltreatment and racism between students. The geometry teacher, Mr. Moore demonstrated his racism and poor values as a teacher by don’t let increased the integration in his class. When he heard the insults against Joyce, he only said “let’s get quiet and make the best of it” it is unacceptable heard a teacher said that.
Gatto says that school diminishes creativity; if anything kids discover their hidden creativeness in class while at school. He also says that kids are not able to advance in higher learning. When clearly, kids are able to follow the teacher and be able to get A's while the subjects get more extreme. Gatto says, "teachers tend to blame the kids, as you might expect"(pg. 683) from personal experiences I can say that I have had great relationships with my teachers throughout elementary school and especially High school.
I actually hate that book!”My dad looked at me with confusion. He said, “What is wrong? You liked it yesterday.”“I just don’t like it, okay!” I said wanting him to leave me alone. Of course, he is my dad, so he got it out of me. I told him what happened at school.
Kids of any age will try to convince their parents that they are sick so they don’t have to go to school for the day and hate school. “Little Rock Nine”, on the other hand, actually valued their education. They literally put their lives on the line to go to Central High School and learn. Sure some people sometimes travel three or more hours to get to school but to have to deal with a riot everyday and be criticized for how they look is just cruel. Kids these days have no idea how hard life was back then, even the African American student haven’t a clue to how harsh life was, not just in Central High School but their lives in general were always being tortured.
The second reason I picked Einstein was because he hated school, something most kids can relate to. He was always in trouble with his teachers because his mind wandered and he had a bad memory. What do you expect? He had his mind on more important things. Like Einstein said, “imagination is more important than knowledge.” When he was young, teaching in Germany was all done by drill.
What is the school? Beautiful garden, a paradise of growth, the academy of special education, mental homes, many principals would describe their own school. However, the lid prop to tell people, their understanding of the school is all wrong. Turn over the documents of the United States 100 years in the education sector, control examination pass rate plummeted, and the front-line teachers complain of school education in the lid prop that the manufacture of a number of schools all mentally mediocre mind, habits of obedience, he unceremoniously school compared to the factory. What school?
Moore gives examples of numerous times that politicans have said that it is the teacher’s fault that education in America is not how It should be. Moore heard a talk show person talk about how people do not even know basic literature and when Moore calls up the talk show person the person did not even know what the books were. This shows how people talk about how bad teachers are but the teachers are not the problem. Moore brings up what Nixon said by saying that he said that libraries are
Yelling is not the right way to teach a child that they just did something wrong. When you explain to a child in a positive yet strict way that their actions were not pleasing, they perceive the information so much better than when being yelled at. Just like with my own children, I always reassured my classroom children that even though they made a bad decision, I still love them. The challenge didn’t come from my own classroom, the challenges came from the guardians. Through our program, we had to have several “workshops” with the guardians each year.
