Modern Twist vs. Classic Original In the two versions of Romeo and Juliet by Zeferrelli and Luhrmann, a story of two star-crossed lovers who die in spite of each other takes on two completely opposite directions. Many differences occur between these two movies. While the Zeferrelli film and the Luhrmann film both tell the same story of Romeo and Juliet the films differ throughout both movies, and in the second fight where Tybalt and Mercutio die. From the very beginning of Luhrmann’s film, I noticed the prologue consisted of a news reporter on television, as if telling the latest breaking news story. In Zeferrelli, there was no visible person, but an overhead voice and views of Verona in the 14th century. From these beginning details, I assumed Luhrmann’s movie was set in a more modern time whereas Zeferrelli took place in Shakespeare’s original time set in the 14th century. Another aspect that stuck out to me was the costumes used throughout both films. Zeferrelli’s costumes consisted of tights and vests for men, and gowns that covered most of the body for the women. In Luhrmann’s version, the main costume scheme for men appeared as loose shorts and bright island button down shirts. For women, they would wear shorter, more revealing gowns and skirts and revealing swimsuits on the beach. The first scene that had major contrast was the second fight scene. In the second fight scene when Tybalt and Mercutio die, many differences appear. In Luhrmann’s version, the fight took place on the beach. The storm coming showed major foreshadowing and blended with the mood. However, the mood of the fight is not as light and quick-witted as Zeferrelli’s. Zeferrelli’s film has this fight placed in the middle of town and the people involved made it seem like a playful joke. When Mercutio gets stabbed by Tybalt in Zeferrelli’s film, people still joke around and think nothing of
