Marcus Powell Kenneth Quilantang English 22 14 November 2013 Cockfighting should remain illegal in Hawaii Cockfighting should remain illegal in Hawaii because it is cruelty to animals, it promotes violence, and gambling. Cockfighting is an illegal sport that involves chicken to fight one another. This type of act is dangerous because before the chickens fights they have razor-sharp gaff attach to their legs. The birds are then left to fight one or more opponents until all but one are either dead or so savagely wounded they cannot continue. “With cockfighting comes gambling and a bunch of other organized crime activities, which isn’t good.” Said Lt. Sherry Bird, commander or the Kona Vice Division Gambling is involved to where people are betting on which bird they think will be the last one standing and gambling is illegal in the state of Hawaii. So cockfighting should remain illegal in Hawaii because cruelty to animals, violence, and gambling are all illegal in the state of Hawaii. According to Lt. Burt Shimabukuro, “ cockfighting runs from Thanksgiving through the July 4 weekend.” It has been a growing issue for many years and has supporters who don’t think that it is wrong. Some supporters feel this way because they say it’s for recreational and enjoyment. I personally think it’s still wrong because the birds can’t really defend for itself. Other supporters say it’s part of their culture. According to Humane Society of the United States, Rep. Manahan a native of the Phillippines, “ cockfighting is openly practiced.” But if that nation or any nation sanctioned child abuse or sexual molestation, we would not find the cultural argument the least bit persuasive.
