English 110 Grossmont college Cindi Harris Rhetorical Précis and Response Elizabeth Thoman in the article, “Rise of the Image Culture: Reimagining the American Dream,” argues that television advertising has created a new American Dream that is based on consumerism. Thoman supports her argument by showing that Americans have always sought after a dream, explaining that television advertising has shaped and defined us to be materialistic, and explaining that television advertising teaches how to think. The author’s purpose is to inform us of everything that our advertisements are doing to our dreams so that we will be abele to try to avoid all the media’s dreams, and have our own dreams. The author writes in a formal tone to the readers of Media & Values magazine. There are two types of evidence used in this article, allusion and expert authority. For allusion, the author is saying that our desire for a better life goes back to the Bible days. This is allusion because a brief reference to a text that the writer expects the reader to have some knowledge, the knowledge the reader possesses about the allusion is used to support the claim. The second kind of evidence used in the article was expert authority. For expert authority, the author asks an expert for her opinion and the expert responds with saying that we are partially to blame for TV advertisements being in our homes. This is expert authority because a person with credentials that demonstrates expertise in the topic that is being discussed. The author used this text to introduce the idea that the American dream used to be based on this notion that ingenuity and technology and progress were cornerstone to a successful future.
