Ian loved not knowing a single soul when he was there. “What had struck him most forcibly was the fact that when he walked down the street he hadn’t known anyone.” Pg 20. He found it liberating. His mother must have too, because she decided she wanted to leave Struan with Ian’s geography teacher, Robert Patterson. Ian’s mother had never really been there for him.
Not just in this lousy little town. In general. My life, I mean. It’s almost like I got killed over in Nam… Hard to describe. That night when Kiowa got wasted, I sort of sank down into the sewage with him… Feels like I’m still deep shit.”(Page 150) Bowker is also intelligent and is well supported by his parents, but he did not see any meaning in getting a job or even going to school.
I think there were other reasons also, but the story points to this one in many places. First of all, Connie was not happy at home. To me Connie felt ignored by her dad and the other family members because they could give her the attention she wanted. This sort of relates to John Hughes movie "Sixteen Candles" Sam Baker struggles to get through the day on her 16th birthday because her entire family has forgotten about it and gave there attention elsewhere, to her sister wedding. Her father was most of the time at work and when he was home he didn't bother talking much to Connie.
Restorative Justice Story Two boys were close friends when they were growing up because their families lived in the same apartment building. The boys were always doing everything together. Robbie was six-teen and John was fourteen. Both John and Robbie came from a single parent family with the mom providing the necessities. With both of their moms working minimum wage jobs and never being home to support their family the children had to cook and fend for themselves on a daily basis.
Instead of teaching full time at the school he just taught par time and worked part time at the bar. Once he got laid off from the school his wife left him and left him a note saying “ you are a failure, you will never make any money, and you will never go anywhere in life”. That note was his inspiration throughout the film and every time he would get his ass kicked, have a rough game, or felt like he couldn't do something he looked to the note and always rose up stronger. The biggest difference for me from the book to the movie was that in the book his dad taught him everything he knew and helped him in the NFL, and in the movie his dad did not help him at all and even told Vince that he didn't think is was a good idea to go to the teams tryouts. The only person who really taught him something in the movie was his teammate who played the center position.
Never in all the food, all the hamburgers and malts, all the fries or meals at home, never in all the candy or pies or cakes, never in all the roasts or steaks or pizzas, never in all the submarine sandwiches, never, never, never had he tasted anything as fine as that first bite. Brian would have had easy access to meals, which meant that he was never really concerned about it. However in the wilderness accessing food for Brian and the creatures was very important in order to survive. Brian’s ability to be resourceful and independent enabled him to find food and build a shelter. The process of Brian’s change did not happen overnight.
Kat Poirot 12/14/12 Period D A.C. Houghton's life, with his family by his side, was very productive. However, an accident, and it's after affects, laced the edges with tragedy. The mansion has been out of the family, but some say they never left. Mr. Houghton was vital in the creation of North Adams, however, the public is often unaware of his contributions. Mr. Houghton came from humble beginnings, and always had his family to fall back on.
Americans never just sit back and ever truly relax. Personally, I cannot say I am any different than your typical American. If I’m not at work, I’m at school; if I’m not at school, I’m doing homework or cleaning. Every free chance I get after that is spent with my family and friends doing something entertaining. So even when I am free from all of my responsibilities, I still don’t ever truly feel “relaxed”.
Everything was new and exciting. However, as time passed by, I felt really lonely and started missing my friends really bad. That is certainly the worst part about moving to another country: your social life gets really affected by that. I was always an easy person to become friends with, so I thought that wouldn’t be a problem for me here, but unfortunately I was wrong. I have lots of friends in Brasilia, and we used to hang out every weekend, and when we had nothing to do, they’d come over to my place so we could watch movies and play some games.
In India, they could not eat ice cream, salad, cold food, or any fruit you could not peel and definitely no meat. When Kothari went to boarding school in London they ate steak and kidney pie. This just shows another way how your personal identity can be defined without
