Renting a Car vs Buying a Car Shelby Allred Eng 121 Instructor: Kim Elliott-White March 5, 2012 With spring just around the corner, many people are beginning to think of warm weather and making vacation plans. There are many decisions to be made when making plans for a vacation. One of these decisions is whether to travel in one’s own vehicle or rent a vehicle. This paper will discuss the advantages of both. Driving one’s personal vehicle can be the least expensive choice. The only expenses for driving a personal vehicle are the costs of fuel for the trip, making sure all the belts and hoses are in good working order, making sure the tires are in good shape and that all the necessary liquids are topped off to keep the vehicle in great shape for the trip. There are advantages to driving one’s own vehicle besides saving the cost of rental fees. One advantage would be that if the vacation should need to be extended for a few extra days, no extra expense would be involved. Also, driving one’s own vehicle means there are no worries about getting the car back to the rental company at a certain time on a certain day. Another advantage is that if there is external or internal damage to the vehicle, that is not accident related, the insurance on the vehicle will not be affected. One of the biggest disadvantages of driving a personal vehicle is having the car to break down during the trip. This can cause more expense and inconvenience. Renting a vehicle has advantages and disadvantages as well. Renting a car is expensive. Rental fees can run over $1000 for a week, especially for a family van or an SUV and have terrible gas mileage.
