As well as religious control, for most colonies church membership was required in order to vote. Puritans socially influenced the early colonies the most out of any of the 3 categories. Puritan religion not only had strict ideals, but the people that followed those ideals took their religion and made it encompass their entire life. There was a much wider age range in families due to families immigrating in groups from England. Families were also larger and healthier.
Religion was the real reason that colonization began, with out it, the colonies all over the world would not have ever came to be. The fourteenth century was when factors that would eventually lead to the start of colonization began. The followers of John Wycliffe, also known as Lollards, had pushed their ideas of religious power on the religious community: both the bible and religion had ultimate power over everything (Reformation 4). Martin Luther was one of the first men to openly go against the Lollards ideas. He believed that the Catholic church was corrupt for selling indulgences as penance for sins in that the sale was a way for the Church to exploit the unfortunate and poor (Reformation 5).
So they could worship as they wished, which they didn’t have in Europe. They wanted a close knit Christian community. They both left for different reasons, and they have a similarity in this difference. They both came so they could live their lives better and how they wanted to live them. Second the Chesapeake region did bring religion with them; however that was second on their list.
Therefore, it can be said that religion can be used as a form of cultural defence against the rapidly increasing West. The use of religion as a cultural defence is very evident in modern times with the rise of Fundamentalism. Those from ethnic minorities opposing Western values so much that they are willing to kill others and themselves to prove this. The clash of civilisations has been evident between Islam and the West for hundreds of years but became known throughout the world after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Fundamentalists are using religion to defend their culture in a negative way and have thus created a stigma for ethnic minorities.
Societies and beliefs were changed but they always united people as one. Religion also created this human organization in collaboration with the superhuman. Religion in the pre-modern world brought the social society within the groups. The Paleolithic Hunters and Gatherers were a small amount of people who lived in an equalitarian society. Men and women were equal and therefore they were allowed religious expression.
By this Winthrop means that the populace of America, as well as the rest of the world, will be watching them. There would be many negative opinions as their controversial moves are very different from those of societies in the past and not what is expected of people under their current social rules and guidelines. He tells them that if their society succeeds they will show the entire world that they can attain religious freedom and escape the tyranny of the English crown. This part of the speech is arguably the most famous and served to be very true. The success of their colony leads not only other puritans to leave England but also people of other religions and backgrounds who were also fed up with the crown.
Religion for a functionalist would be viewed as more of a reinforcement for the values that society holds. One thing almost all religions have in common is the lesson of being “good”, to treat others how you would want to be treated. It also gives people something to turn to when they feel lost, or something to blame when life is not going the way the would like. Religion holds people together in many ways, offering stability to society. Religion does, however hold both manifest and latent functions.
Most people fight for there religion everyday, how they should have the same freedom as everyone else while others don't agree. Imagine if you had grown up following a religion, that you thought was the only way to live, and then one day the government decides to make a law that doesn't follow or allow in the ways

This is mainly because, during the Middle ages and Renaissance The Church had the most control over the people and government, Religion played a huge role in everyday life and the only religion that existed was the Catholic religion. For different crimes committed, there were multiple unjust and inconsistent punishments, also people did not have equal human rights.
