They decided to come to the new world after the Church of England separated from Catholicism in a decision made by King Henry VIII. Although the Church of England and Catholicism were no longer intertwined, they still felt they did not have the entire amount of religious freedom they desired. They decided that the best course of action would be to head to the new world so they could start a society in which they could practice their religious beliefs freely and without persecution. They were also joined by some quakers and catholics who had not joined the church of England, who also wanted freedom to practice their religious beliefs how they saw fit. Although they came to the new world to start a society based on living a religious life, having religious freedom, and being a
But instead of docking in Virginia they ended up landing in New England, and so it marked the beginning of Puritan settlement New England. Others desired a change in lifestyle, despite originating from the same area, England, Members of the Anglican or Church of England, these men had no reason to search and establish a new way of life, instead they wished to fortify and make their lives better for materialistic reasons as opposed to religion. From the beginning New England and Chesapeake settlers started off creating their colonies disparately. (Document C) Since settlers came to the Chesapeake with the intention of not staying for long, they traveled alone, not with families. At a six to one ration of mostly men, they left England to seek profit from gold.
She also kept religious images and traditional church robes in her churches, and even allowed unofficial Puritan church services. However, Puritans still weren’t happy with the religious settlement Elizabeth had decided on because they believed it to still be too Catholic, so they formed an opposition movement. The “Puritan Choir” were also involved
Chesapeake and New England Colonies Although, their locations (regions), their beliefs and their attitudes provided the major factors; North America had eventually developed into two distinct societies known as New England and Chesapeake in the 1700’s. New England and Chesapeake were founded for many reasons; New England was primarily founded on religious reasons. New England had many religions for example, Puritans which was a religion based on the godly word. The “True Protestants” which were the root of protestant reformation in England. There were also Catholics, in which had descended from England as well.
Failures of the Second Great Awakening were small. They included ones such as Christian clergymen not being able to stop the Sunday mail so people can focus on god that day. Important leaders in this movement were Charles Brandison (evangelical leader who emphasized person conversion experiences and gave intense sermons), Barton W. Stone (another very effective preacher of the awakening), and Alexander and Thomas Campbell (Alexander was a leader, Thomas was a Presbyterian minister). The main cause of educational reform was the new thought brought about by the Enlightenment Movement. This movement is essentially why the US became an independent country and with its independence and the new style of thinking, new ideas like a desire to institute mandatory public education came about.
Although the New England and Chesapeake regions were originally colonized by mainly English settlers, the two regions in time evolved into two distinct societies. By 1700, their religious practices, family relations, and political differences led them in two different directions. New England was a refuge for religious separatists leaving England, while people who immigrated to the Chesapeake region had no religious motives. In Document A, John Winthrop talks a lot about uniting together to basically please God, and spread his word. John Winthrop states that the Puritan goal was to form "a city upon a hill", which would represent a "pure" community, where Christianity could be pursued (Document A).
Exactly, why is freedom achieved only for Englishmen and not women or anyone else not of the European race? How is this considered freedom? Is this how the difference in development occurred? First off, in New England Calvinism (created by John Calvin) was the people’s fate already predetermined, causing control of the people, and some wanting to break away from the church. The biggest difference causing the Pilgrims versus the Puritans, was the Pilgrims wanted a complete separation from the Church of England, and the Puritans on the other hand.
They saw little chance for remaining true to their faith as long as they remained in England. Both agreed with Martin Luther that no pope or bishop had a right to impose any law on a Christian without consent and both accepted John Calvin’s view that God freely chose those he would save and those he would dame eternally. Another less-than-subtle difference between the two groups is the economic and social status of their people. The Pilgrims at Plymouth were, for the most part, yeomen - working people. There were some among them successful enough to merit the title "Master," but none who appended to his name the title "Gent."
Analyze the extent to which religious freedom existed in the British North American colonies prior to 1700. Prior to 1700 there was some form of religious tolerance in the Southern and Middle colonies while the New England colonies showed strict religious intolerance. There was hardly any religious tolerance in the New England colonies which was inhabited mostly by Puritans. After separating from the Church of England many of them moved to the New World in order to escape prosecution. The forming of towns and communities together with their strict beliefs, lead to this superior number of Puritans.
