Reflection On Frances Kissling Podcast: Abortion

One of the most controversial issues with no definite solution has been lingering among us for over thirty years. Abortion has been of utmost concern to many people be it a religious or personal issue. The Kissling Podcast observes abortion through the perspective of a Catholic woman. This suggests that she is against abortion, correct? Well, she is the president of the Catholics for Choice group discussing the issues of abortion and why she, and the other members, is prochoice. She delves into her personal life, her views of abortion, and her reasoning behind this contentious matter. Kissling begins by explaining that she became a nun at the age of nineteen and has always been a little inconsistent in her faith. Her mother was divorced and Kissling herself believed that she should be able to have sex. This is understandable through her issues on abortion. I believe abortion is a ‘taboo’ in many religions, Catholic being one of them, and therefore making this issue even more complicated. She goes on to discuss her stance on abortion and why she is prochoice. She explains that, “abortion is not a positive good, it has positive outcomes.” Her perspective implies that there are legitimate concerns abortion carries but the outcome is why she believes it should be done. The interviewer made a remark I believe illustrates the true controversy of this issue in that, “abortion remains more abstract because it is a moment of sadness, grief, and confusion.” This statement underlines the situation and its complexity. This issue is so controversial that it has been compared to genocide. This can be seen through two articles titled Abortion is a Form of Genocide and Abortion is not a Form of Genocide—two articles that directly refute each other’s perspectives and give insight to either side of the issue.
