Arielle Coulter Movie Review 1 10/2/13 Red Dog There is something extraordinary about story telling. When we are young we need fairy tales to stimulate our growing imaginations. As we age, so does our need for stories; the stories grow with us. We go from sitting on Daddy’s lap with an old worn book to sitting around a fire, walking down memory lane with an old timer. From tales of slaying dragons, magical fairies, and ‘once upon a time’s’ to tales of heartache, magical moments and ‘I remember a time when’s.’ We are all suckers for a good story and even bigger suckers for the ones that are or could be true. How he was a dog for every man but with loyalty to no man, having no real master. As the story continues, the once deserted bar begins to fill as word spreads of Red Dog’s imminent death. Many of whom are employees of Hamersley Iron, a major iron ore excavation in progress. As the people come so do the stories, all in the town have a unique connection to Red in some way shape or form. He looks for John and the pub, at Hamersley Iron, any and every where John could be until all of Dampier is ruled out. He then continues across much of the Australian North West Pilbara region from Perth to Darwin, even being rumored to have caught a ship to Japan in search for John. This is how Red Dog became famous; looking for the one man he would ever pledge his allegiance. After exploring much of Australia, he finally realized John was really gone forever. Weary and travel worn, Red returns home to Dampier after years of grieving, much to the delight of the town. It is surrounded by these people that Red Dog drifts away, making his final act leaving his makeshift hospital room to lie down at the feet of his master’s headstone, never to leave again. Sad yet heart-warming, with plenty of comedy, Red Dog is a film that should be in every collection. A story for the books to be told again and again; a story we can all believe in. It reminds us about faith, hope and unyielding love. A dog really can be a man’s best friend, for Australia, Red Dog is the epitome of that
