The Bill was created to prevent a repeat of the Bonus March of 1932 and a relapse into the Great Depression after World War II ended. The American Legion (a veterans group) was essentially responsible for many of the Bill’s provisions. The Legion managed to have the bill apply to all who served in the armed services, including African Americans and women. The fact that the Bill paid for a G. I.’s entire education encouraged many universities across the country to expand enrollment. For example, the University of Michigan had fewer than 10,000 students prior to the war, but in 1948 its enrollment was well over 30,000.
My father Kenneth Sprick fled to America in September of 1939 to escape Nazi Persecution. He has been sending us money in helping us to save up enough money for us to travel to America. July 12th 1944 Today my family and I collected enough money to go overseas to America. I have been waiting for this moment a long time, ever since the Nazis have been raiding the houses in our neighborhood. My mom and brother can’t wait to get to America so they can get a decent paying job and so they can feed me and Brad, my younger brother.
More collaboration and negotiation among the two parties occurred until the signing of the first contract on June 20, 1941 that include detailed back pay wages to more than 4,000 employees wrongfully discharged (History, 2012). Over the years, the relationship between Ford Motor Company and United Automobile Workers Union strengthened with various new programs, which secured health and pension benefits to the employees and policies geared toward production processes, and the quality of life of its employees and their families (Ford Motor Company,

The GI Bill has provided the opportunity for many military families to be able to better their possibilities at gaining an education. The GI Bill has played a major role in the college system from its beginning stages. Many service men took advantage of the scholarship programs that were provided to them through the GI Bill and began enrolling in college. By the end of the original program in 1956 more than half of the 16 million veterans, had gone to college or had received some sort of job training. After World War I, Veterans returning to the United States would receive a little more than $60 in allowance a day and a train ticket to get back home.
The massive number of European immigrants that entered into America’s east coast from the late 1800’s and on forever influenced the growth and development of the country. Fleeing crop failure, famine, rising taxes, and land/job shortages, many immigrants journeyed to the United States because it was perceived as the land of economic opportunity. With hope for a brighter future, nearly 27 million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1880 and 1920. The majority of the immigrants entered through Ellis Island, leading it to become the gateway to America and become recognized as a national symbol. Many of the immigrants, not knowing the way America worked, didn’t stray too far from the East Coast and moved into areas filled with people of similar languages, traditions, and beliefs.
Sam traveled with his aunt in 1892. He was to establish himself and send for others- mothers, siblings.” (Cohen 12). Like many people, America was the way to help stabilize and create a better living for his family. He goes on to say, “By eighteen, he had saved enough to send for his brothers and sisters […]” (Cohen 15). This was common, as most families could not afford to send everybody at once.
Every day there are Americans departing for a war zone or returning from their most recent tour. Thanks to new advancements in technology and health care there are more solders returning than ever before in the history of the armed forces. Thou for many that is great news, but for some its life changing, now more than ever solders are returning with injury’s that would have been a death sentence in wars of the past. There are many returning with injuries to one if not more of their limbs, head injuries, brain damage, and mental disorders that they will live with for the rest of their lives. This is creating a huge challenge for returning veterans now that many need help with coping with the return.

The number of divorces per 1000 people, also known as the divorce rate, doubled from a rate of 2.6 to 5.4 between the 1950s and 1980s (Mooney, Knox, & Schacht, 2007). In 1990, when the divorce rate was 4.7, there were 1,182,000 divorces in the United States (Births, Deaths, Marriages, & Divorces, 2006).
Name Professor Subject Date The Multiculturalism Movement “Many Peoples, One Nation” was the motto of Francis Kellor’s organization when it sponsored “Americanization Day”. Americans celebrated the new immigrants who passed their nationalization tests. In New York in 1918, 70,000 immigrants marched to show their pride in their adopted country. American flags flew above the heads of the immigrants who wore the costumes and presented the foods of their native countries. With our ongoing contentions regarding immigration, naturalization and assimilation, it is difficult to imagine how this worked; how the immigrant could become “Real Americans” while retaining their native county ties and identities.
