Reading Response – ‘Harrison Bergeron’ ‘Harrison Bergeron’ is a short story written by Kurt Vonnegurt. The story is situated in the distant future of 2081. The story is about the community being forcefully changed by the corrupt government. They force people to be equal as one another. There is no one that outshines each other. They do this by making their people wear handicap bags on their ears so that they are slow, by putting radio transmitters into intellectual people’s head so that it disrupts their thinking and they can’t show their full potential. In the story the two ideas which I witnessed the author portray was the idea of power and equality. One of the main ideas that the author conveyed to its audience was the idea of power in the community. This idea of power was demonstrated nearly throughout the whole story, because we see the control the government has on his people. In the story, the government degrades the intelligent, strong, and handsome people. He does this for equality amongst the community. An example we see of power in the story is in the near end. Harrison, son of George and Hazel, gets taken away for being an above-average human. This is the first example that shows us the government has power over its unprivileged people. Another example which can confirm the idea of power is present in the story is when Harrison breaks free from being captive. He then breaks into a studio which is having a LIVE broadcast of musicians and ballerinas performing. He takes the spotlight and tells everyone…show more content…
The ideas of power and equality were seen in the story, and I had learnt quite a bit from it. When we have power over people, we should never abuse people with it. Just like the government in the story abuses his people with his power. We should give people equal rights, not make them equal, for everyone is different in their own
