Reaction Essay: Why Reading Matters (Documentary)

The information I grasped from Why Reading Matters blew me away. First of all, I was intrigued by the explanations about brain activation and how reading plays an important roll in it. Apparently, your brain “lights up” when it reads action words, as if you wee taking part yourself: this makes me wonder about all of our capabilities if we used our brain carefully. I did not appreciate that most of the research is still in progress. I also did not enjoy the poor conclusions of the lack of book sales. Here I am, blogging and sharing my opinion about a documentary, which means I am a part of that guilty population. Reading is important, there’s no doubt of that, it’s basically necessary for survival. We were not born with the ability to do so, because it’s a skill, it’s something you develop because you need it. If humans never learned how to read, the world would be a totally different place. Why? Because the execution of writing works hand in hand with reading; the statement is self-explanatory. Although writing is important, so is drawing or the knowledge of figures. Just like an animal can recognize an animal’s footprint, we can identify the origin of traces left behind by experience. This is another example of why reading is a skill; it’s based on experience and lessons learned. Humans, as usual, took the use of symbols to identify to a whole new level as they formed “universal texts”. Languages such as English and Spanish are understood in most regions of the world, but Mandarin still ranks #1 as the most spoken/written. It’s incredible how different Mandarin is from these two languages, as it uses symbols to represent complete words instead of letters. I believe there is no specific reason for this. The differences are only cultural and dependent on historical backgrounds. English and Spanish relate because they are both European, having a sort of relation
