Mitchell Heyne Composition 2 January 7, 2014 Unit 3 Assignment 1 Summary Response Paper “Wow, this isn’t a bad article” I said to myself as I was reading “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” The point of this article is that people are losing the ability to concentrate for long periods of time, especially if they have no interest in the subject. Some people see this as a mental disorder, however, this is due to people trying to look for a quick fix and not doing the thorough research. I will agree that the way people are thinking is indeed changing, some for the good, but most for the bad as well. Search engines are rerouting our memory. According to one article in Science magazine, we're not necessarily losing our ability to remember things.
The way I improved my paper was taking my instructors constructive criticism and making the necessary corrections, to the best of my ability. I had obvious problems with the comma usage, dangling modifiers, and it was no question that I have to improve my vocabulary. Referring back to the text book and using the Thesaurus definitely helped me make the best revisions that I can make. The most challenging part of this assignment for me was to expand the use of my vocabulary. I know a lot of words; I just don’t use them in my everyday conversation, thus making it more difficult to incorporate in my essay.
Faber’s Knowledge Books are something everyone takes advantage of, nobody knows how important they are until they’re gone. In Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 Montag goes to Faber to seek advice about the books. He finds out Faber’s beliefs in book’s purpose, quality, and the leisure of people. Faber also believes that fear of the truth in books drove people away, and now without the books there is only chaos. When Faber told Montag what the purpose of books were, he spoke, “Books are a receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget,” so without them everything would slowly be forgotten (83).
There should have been some graphical representations in the book. According to me a book is incomplete without charts and graphs. I haven’t understood the idea behind describing each and every character in detail, in each story in the whole book. Because of what, the main idea of the book remains hidden. However I enjoyed reading the book, because the main idea of”POWER OF THINKING WITHOUT THINKING” is very interesting and very different.
People are losing concentration easier than before internet was created. He is just frustrated that he can’t sit down and enjoy a long book like he used to which is why he wrote this article based on his own experience. Many points were stated in this article that might be true for certain individuals, but not for me. The one thing
Also it wasn’t very clear in what happened to Jeremy. This was a great ending because this book always keeps you thinking but never find out what really happens. Clearly, Lil' J's life isn’t going into the right direction. This book has some of drug content and violence. It is more suited for young adults or older people who enjoy thinking when
Carr thinks that this is bullshit. They underestimate the qualities of our human brain. Of course, it’s true that because of Google, we have more time to daydream, but we don’t do it because our brain is to busy processing all the vibes we got from using Google. Recent research expelled that daydreaming (short periods of psychic suspence) can give you a lot of creativity. They give you new ways of thinking, associating and ideas.
Berry’s intention to persuade readers depends whether the reader agrees or disagrees with his reasons. In the end, Berry presents his personal reasons he has for rejecting computer, but has no scientific evidence or any other way to support his reasons. In my personal opinion, Berry fails to persuade other than himself because most people could not identify with his reasons. The fact that many of what he considered his reasons’ strong seemed illogical to computers’ users. For that any many other factors, public might not feel persuade by
Ray Bradbury talks about Fahrenheit not so much being about censorship but about being a society that didn’t read. People in the story are not intrested in reading because they think books are the cause of depression and how books carry on myths and legends. Also how technology has replaced books and that it has also affected relationships. To begin with people are siimple and unquestiong. They depend upon technology so much they think is a waste of time to open up a book.
My biggest weakness is an unwillingness to accept my limitations. For example, I often take on too many responsibilities and find myself not being able to do as well as I could in any of them given how overstretched I am. I also have a lot of impatience when it comes to improving things such as how we deliver higher education and need to be willing to accept how slow change can be. Why have you selected psychology as a profession? I did not choose it as a profession as my graduate work is in Higher Education but I like to study psychology in my free time as I think a lot of principles of the field can be applied to making better public policy and improving human
