"From Rags to Raja" Imagine living day to day, with what little you have also gets taken away. A misfortune changes your life; fighting and stealing now are the only ways to survive. To live in a world where luck and money determines one’s destiny, turning a kid into a thief, a gangster, and sometimes even into a millionaire. The highly acclaimed movie of 2008, Slumdog Millionaire was positively received by movie viewers worldwide. Despite of being a different taste for the general public, the movie got nominated for more than 20 awards and took home 19 (including an Oscar). The script of the movie highlights some key social issues like: poverty, kids in slum life, fulfilling everyday needs, and the future of these kids. The emotive storyline, exceptional acting, and the upbeat music of the movie makes Slumdog Millionaire a must see movie of all times. The movie begins with Jamal Malik (an 18 year old from the slums of Bombay, India) competing on the Indian version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire”. He goes through flashbacks of his life, taking the viewers to his fondest childhood memory of getting an autograph from Amitabh Bachchan (famous Bollywood actor). Jamal’s and Salim’s (brothers) lives instantly changes when their mother gets killed in the Bombay Riots. In the effort of saving their own lives, both brothers run away and are forced to rely on each other for survival. During their run, they bump into Latika (Jamal’s love interest) and all three end up being in an orphanage. Salim soon discovers that all the kids in the orphanage are being trained and forced to become beggars. Salim takes Jamal and they make a second escape, leaving Latika behind. After earning some money, the two brothers go back to find Latika but their fate has something else stored for them. Flash-forward, we find Jamal working as a chai wala (tea server) at the ITS
