The untrained individuals would look at psychopathology as being a study of mental disorders on the mere manifestation of different behaviors. However, we in the field of psychology would determine what is by going through the basics. It is commonly referred to as abnormal psychology which is the clear understanding of nature, certain treatments, and the many different causes. There are several ways in fact to where individuals in the field of psychology may use to explain psychology. For example, one psychologist may use descriptive psychopathology to which will strive to provide answers for symptoms or mental illness.
It assumes that human problems come from operating on faulty, irrational beliefs. Some of these beliefs are conscious but many are not. Behavior Theory suggests that human actions are the results of what we have learned or been conditioned to do and that when these actions are reinforced consistently, by either reward or punishment, they become the basis of functioning in our lives. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy recognizes that thoughts and behaviors are connected and addresses both in its model. CBT is a problem-solving/task-centered approach which recognizes and challenges illogical and faulty beliefs in an effort to change negative or destructive behavior.
Psychodynamic and Cognitive-Behavioural approach. In this assignment I will be comparing and contrasting how the psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioural approaches to counselling understand the person, and how these two approaches explain psychological distress experienced by individuals. I am going to start by describing the key concepts of each approach and then outlining the similarities and differences. Psychodynamic approach The main purpose of the dynamic approach is to explain behaviour in terms of its dynamics. i.e.
Sigmund Freud was the first to challenge the view that mental disorders were caused by physical illness and proposed that psychological factors were responsible for the illness. The psychodynamic approach highlights the importance of the unconscious mind and early childhood experiences. Psychodynamic psychologist’s attempt to deal with the mental health issues of their patients by incorporating these ideas and creating therapies using these ideas. The basic concept behind psychoanalysis is that a patient that suffers from mental health problems such as depression can address any regressed feelings thus, the patient gains insight of and can learn to work through their emotional baggage. It is a generalised concept that if the cause of the symptoms were tackled it would only be logical that the symptoms would then cease.

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy that assumes negative behaviors and emotions that are caused by faulty thoughts and thinking patterns (Ford-Martin, 1999). CBT helps clients develop new ways of thinking and behaving. (Galanter ,Keller, & Weinberg, 1997). CBT is used quite often to treat substance abuse issues. The approach focuses on maladaptive behaviors (addictive behaviors) by changing what it perceives to be the root cause of them (faulty thinking).

It helps you to think before you react. • Schema-focused therapy combines treatments to help you evaluate repetitive patterns and themes in life and helps you identify the positive patterns and modify the negative ones. • Transference-focused or psychodynamic psychotherapy helps you understand your emotions and difficulties and then apply your insights to real situations.
