Professional Values and Ethics Learning Team A University of Phoenix GEN/200 September 26, 2011 Professional Values and Ethics We as humans are raised from a little child to an adult to be courteous and respectable toward one another. The way we’re raised go “hand in hand” with our ethics and values. These ethics and values shape us for the respectable career paths and lifestyles we choose. The same ethics and values also carry over into our careers. Once our values carries over into our work and career path, they then become professional values and ethics. The professional values and ethics we choose to use will deeply impact our career success. Throughout this paper we will discuss how professional values, ethics, and career success all correlate to each other. We will also see why it is important to have professional values, and ethics for success in your career. Define Values and Ethics Values consist of what a person or people believe in. It is the “beliefs of a person or social group in which they have an emotional investment” (“Webster's Online Dictionary”, n.d.). People have a tendency to believe in something that might make them feel better, such as politics. Politics is a strong subject, in which certain parties would define their roles in three different ways: Democratic, Republican, and Neutral. Each has a certain reason for what they believe in, and is willing to make that investment within it. Ethic is “motivation based on ideas of right and wrong.” (Webster's Online Dictionary, n.d.). In some ways it can be considered, as what a person feels is their natural duty as a person/human. This is another form of morality. People have philosophical morals and values, in which they feel strongly about what they should and should not do. This can often be an emotional tie to a decision.
