The Prison System Pamela Glover Axia College of University of Phoenix CJS 200 The American Prison system is considered to be a home too many of the nations criminals. This is an ever-growing population this is due to the incarceration of nonviolent criminals, where an alternate punishment would suffice. The provisions of the inmates are drawn directly out of society's pocket, in the form of taxes. In believing we as a nation, should focus on providing more sensible, cost-effective ways for criminals to pay off their own debt for being incarcerated because I was not found guilty nor was the rest of the innocent public so why should we have to pay for their living arrangements? Most of these crimes should constitute jail time, unless it may be solved by a simple anger management session coupled with counseling. Most property crimes that involve theft should be referred to probation, or more effectively house arrest. Fifteen percent of the increase of inmates from 1995 to 2001 was due to drug offenders. Drug crimes, depending upon if they are part of a larger crime or not should be referred to probation, with scheduled tests. In 2004, there were 4,919 black inmates per 100,000 black males in the United States, compared to 1,717 Hispanic males per 100,000 and only 717 white males per 100,000. This seems to be quite the racial divide. This could be the result of racism within the system. In a similar issue, the percentage of women in the prison system is on the rise as well. The number of women has risen 2.9% since 1995, reaching 103,310 in 2001, compared to 2.0% increase in male inmates, reaching 1,390,906. This is the point I wish to put into terminology by ranting about the prison system is that there are more imperative things at hand than watching select groups and individuals with a scrutinizing eye and waiting for them to cross the line. Law enforcement may be more successful if they would step back and look at the gigantic picture. All proceedings should be taken into account with the same, unprejudiced judgment that each and every case
