The money from taxes on cigarettes goes to the state, and with this years tax increase the state will bring in $265 million tax dollars. Sellers such as private business owners are extremely disappointed in the tax increase. “More and more smokers in New York State are going to abandon our stores that have to charge the tax and shift their purchases to places that don’t charge the tax, most notably Native American Stores, the internet, and bootleggers.” (2008, Calvin). When Mayor Bloomberg started the rise of cigarette tax he did not want people to pay the price, they aimed for them to quit smoking. However, all the Mayor did was open the doors to bootleggers all over the country to come and sell cigarettes to New Yorkers, and make a
Every year our state has to spend a large sum of money on supervising marijuana because it is illegal. But once Proposition 19 is passed, those marijuana offenders and drug traffickers will be innocent. “The measure could result in savings to the state and local governments by reducing the number of marijuana offenders incarcerated in state prisons and county jails, as well as the number placed under county probation or state parole supervision”(Brown 14). This could save California millions of dollars annually.

In the US, tobacco is the single most remunerative business in existence. Large tobacco industries as well as smaller businesses would be affected by the ban, and farmers of the plant would find themselves at loss of jobs. Unemployment is already a major issue in today’s society, and this ban would cause its rates to rocket. Tobacco is also a prominent player in the trade industry; countries such as LEDCs that rely on its trade (amongst that of other products) for their economy would find themselves at great loss. However, it could be argued that since tobacco lowers life expectancy and causes diseases, tobacco costs considerably more than it should to the taxpayer.
Obama vs. Romney Obama vs. Romney The fight for building America upon itself compelling America into downward spiral is due to unnecessary actions that take place due to America’s money-hungry monopolies as well as the government. For money people it seems as though everyone who has money makes money, and the people that need money seem to need more every day. It seems that middle class people cannot seem to make a mortgage payment on time because gas prices are so high. The president of the United States needs to take a stand and change the money issues America is having. While both Barack Obama and Mitt Romney are family guys and in the running for becoming the president, Obama is a gentle caring man, who captures the hearts of Americans with his smile, whereas Mitt Romney is aggressive, and seems to always have to defend himself.

However in the long-run, this price raise is not enough to make people quit smoking so since cigarettes are a demerit good, it will have a negative effect on the environment and it will increase the number of health issues from second hand smoke, not to mention the high unemployment rate and less taxes for the government.
