On the other hand, in “College Pressure”, Zinsser notes that students operate on stress overload brought on by a number of factors, most of which is brought on by the overwhelming urgency and need to succeed and do their best. Despite the fact that college is supposed to be a time when further studies are explored and developed. Students fear that if they are unable to find a field and succeed in their classes then they will fail in life.
The desire to want to be socially accepted and popular for some can also take on some form of stress for students. This does not exactly pertain to students of higher learning who take on different forms of stress in their collegiate lifetime. Higher learning students, those who have surpassed years of credible college education, face more of the basic form of academic stress. A heavy workload of examinations, homework assignments, and constant studying makes out for these students to be frazzled; with or without a job. A student under this category also deal with the pressure of figuring out what they will do with their lives
College admission is seen to be as very nerve-racking for all hopeful candidates. There is plenty of discrimination in this selective process, especially in Ivy League universities. The entire college application process is very tedious, lengthy, and expensive. Application skills are not something every high school senior has a good grasp on, so it can be extremely difficult for those that are not equipped with the knowledge. “The admission culture of selective colleges today is characterized by a rising degree of deception and –no doubt, unintended –cruelty” (Delbanco 117).

The cultural influences that inundate students at every turn, exacerbated by the media dwarfs most effort of other social influences. The schools have to champion academic necessity and success. Many of the parents of the students are young and do not have the proper support to raise their children. While there are not overwhelming numbers of this, the percentage is high enough to disrupt the academic environment. I have witnessed what one student can do to a classroom and community of students.
For incoming freshmen the stress of going to a new school and meshing with a new team or coach can be stressful. For some students being away from home for an extended period of time for the first time can be a stressor. Another situation that is a common stressor amongst college athlete would include balancing the heavy workload academically with what they are expected to do as part of a team. For some college athletes, stress is about keeping their scholarships and whether or not they can afford the school if certain scholarships are taking away. There are a number of different reasons why college athletes become stressed and can feel a since of helplessness.
As it stands today, there are not many organizations fulfilling this need in society. EWD should help to spawn many offshoot organizations that can help to continue its work and multiply the benefits. Most importantly, I think the civil society benefits to families will be the greatest. A large and overbearing level of debt has a very negative effect on the interactions within families, because it imposes much additional financial stress, in some cases when there is already much to deal with. To some simply attending college though, is not good enough. You work hard to acquire good grades, and stress yourself while studying. You get an idea of time management because of the consequences you face for being tardy to class and knowing that being late several times could be considered an absence and affect your final grade.
