Personal Narrative: Mikayla's Addiction

The most engaging and memorable conversations that I have ever had took place just a few weeks ago. I was on my way home from rehab. Not for me, but for my girlfriend, Mikayla. Her father and I had dropped her off at a rehabilitation facility in Opelousas. For the past two years Mikayla has been addicted to opiates that she was prescribed for her anxiety. She ended up building a tolerance to her medicine which led her to take more than prescribed; eventually making her addiction spiral out of control. Given the situation, I realized that her father, Michael, and I had a lot to talk about on the ride home. The truck was a white Ford Explorer. It was in decent condition, but had a very strong smoke smell. The smell irritated me for the entire ride. The driver side floorboard had traces of ash due to him forgetting about a cigarette in the midst of smoking it and not flicking the ashes, which happened frequently. The ride home was a time where I really began to understand Mikayla, her father, and where she comes from. Without his truck, I would have never been able to reach this level of understanding of my girlfriend. It helped Mikayla and I reach a new level on our relationship. Now, I have seen her at her worst, and things can only get better from here. In all I’ve spent about 10 hours riding in his truck, just listening to him talk about his life and what he thinks about my relationship with his daughter. This is a conversation I surely would not have had if I were not riding in his truck. If there was any way to escape, I would have. In the end, though, it is worth the long boring conversations with my girlfriend’s father if it helped get her into a rehabilitation facility and bring her one step closer to becoming a functioning member of society while building a friendship with her
