Essay # 2 Personal Narrative Essay final draft Imagine sitting in a special education room that is filled with 20-25 students. Each student has their own individualized way of learning. However due to current era, this is not taken into consideration. Can you imagine the emotional and physical distress that each student must be undergoing? Probably not. As a result of this and other under lying conditions, many people my age who have a reading/learning disability often dread learning new things. Thus to understand, one must start at the very beginning. First, it was in elementary school, where I suffered from reading and learning disabilities. Due to the time, and not having proper diagnostic screening methods, I was placed in special education classes with other children who had severe disabilities. As a result of this placement, I felt inferior and labeled as a ‘retard.’ I was tormented and teased by other children and treated differently. All of my classes were kept in the same room every day, and I wasn’t even allowed to leave to eat lunch in the cafeteria with the other kids. The only exception was recess, and going home. Second, as a result of my elementary schooling and my home life, I always confined myself to my bedroom. I did not want to interact with other people my age. Due to this situation and other prior events I was traumatized. This not only affected my mental and physical health, but it haltered my development. Till this day, I still find it hard to let others in. Thus, after transitioning to the fifth grade, I was taken out of special education and placed in general classes. I had major difficulties adjusting to this different environment. In special education, each student had to be at the same pace. If one person fell behind, the entire class would have to restart all over again. As a result, students could not work
