My ethical development began when I was a young child. My mother served in the military as a drill instructor and instilled in her three children the value of integrity, honor, strong moral values, and keeping your word. In the Army I was taught and reinforce the value of following through, of keeping a high moral standard in accordance with wearing the uniform. There is no more important and constant use of my ethic than in my current career. As a health care professional I am faced with many ethical situations almost daily. One of the main dealings I face daily is ensuring that business ethics are adhered to. There are many opportunities to charge patients for things that they did not have, or not charge people for things that they did receive, and it is done in the interest of saving time, such as pulling medications under one patient’s name and using them for several patients to avoid pulling the same medication over and over. Things such as compliance programs have done much in the way of helping employees maintaining strong ethical code, and to apply with regulations and standards set forth by the employers (Verschoor, 2007). These annual reminders are needed as the world around us looks for shortcuts, and there is always the potential that you could have the “one bad apple”, however had a compliance program demonstrates that the company is doing its best to keep its employees informed, and exhorting them to behave in an ethical way. Conclusion I believe that ethics need to be formed when a person is young and refined throughout a lifetime. I believe that a person must continue to work to cultivate good ethics and to apply them in their lives. I also believe that companies need ethics to ensure that they behave in a manner beneficial not only to the company, but also to protect their customers, and the company’s
