AICPA Code of Professional Conduct Certified public accountants (CPAs) perform a role that is essential to society. Because of the importance of that role, CPAs have responsibilities to anyone who employs their professional services. CPAs also have a responsibility to assist one another in enhancing the accounting profession, maintaining the public's confidence, and consistently fulfilling the profession's exclusive responsibilities. The voluntary association of CPAs, better known as the AICPA, has proposed a code of conduct that CPAs have chosen to adhere to. Now it is time to discuss the purpose for AICPA’s code, why it is considered the foundation of ethical reasoning, and its most important purposes.
Business Ethics Individual Assignment Due date: Thursday, November 29, 2012 Submitted by: Dwight S. Williams Summary of “The parable of the sadhu” An analysis of the parable written by Bowen H. McCoy has many thought-provoking discourse and debates but I would like to highlight three main points. 1. A lesson in Corporate Ethics --- if the organization does not inculcate a value system then managers may not be supported when the organization is faced with simple or complex ethical issues despite the moral standards of individuals. Ultimate moral standards may be similar but implementation approaches may differ and so moral justification must be based on sources external to the conscience of individuals. However, such a value system must be cognizant of and be sensitive to the individual needs and manage them to the benefit of the organization.
To protect the Starbucks brand, culture, and reputation, each employee is responsible for adhering to the company’s core values. This includes complying with the law, in addition to demonstrating ethical conduct. The ethical culture of Starbucks determines the quality of decisions made by employees. If the employees are working in an ethical environment, they will be compelled to make ethical decisions. Employees are expected to make good decisions using their values, knowledge, and previous experiences.
To follow the code of ethics are the basic duties of the employees. For those reasons, to adopt the code of ethics in the County of San Diego is important to keep the county’s public good and goals. G.M Financial Corporation The main purpose of ethics in the G.M Financial Corp. guide principle of business conduct rule for employees with customers, vendors. Ethical standards are the code of conduct required by the organization for workers to follow. The relationship between organizational culture and ethics is that the organizational culture guides workers when faced with ethical problems. If the organization culture counters what they are required to do ethically, workers may put the organization in jeopardy by not act ethically. When a worker is faced with a decision that others within the organization think as appropriate, though it is unethical, the worker may follow what is acceptable as per the culture. It is the relationship between organizational culture and ethics that can get businesses into significant trouble in the long term.
Just as a good manager knows that rewarding employees for reaching goals is important, the ethical leader will recognize that equal importance must be given to recognize those who exemplify ethical behavior within the organization. Acting also means leading by example by letting ethical behavior guide the actions of the leaders at all times. Doing so will help establish and sustain a culture of ethical behavior. 6. Monitor and Sustain Ethical Behavior.
Personal values can be loosely defined as traits or qualities that are considered worthwhile and can represent one’s highest priorities and deeply held values. The Williams Institute Ethics Awareness inventory can give a person an idea of what their ethical styles and perspectives maybe. These values do not only pertain to a person’s personal life but it also translates to the workplace. The writer’s personal assessment shows that he is a person that focuses on character more than he would on equity. His ethical perspectives tend to be based on what it is to be good rather than what it is to do well.
It is also a branch of philosophy dealing with values relating to human conduct, with respect to the rightness and wrongness of certain actions and to the goodness and badness of the motives and outcomes of such actions. The three sources of professional ethics and values I am going to discuss, are professional integrity, academic integrity, and personal values. Professional integrity is often used in business settings to describe the manner in which employees should act or conduct themselves. Professional integrity is demonstrating practical ethics and professional responsibilities within the work environment. Professional integrity involves being an ethical person.
The rules and regulations of ethics and behavior are affected by the basic values of the goals of company with in the community. Even though there are some organizations that think the only social goal of a company is to gain benefit. With a different school of thought, other members think that the goal of a company is larger than just gaining profit and that everyone that is influenced by the firm's activity, suppliers, employees, shareholders, customers, and the domestic society have a concern and commitment in the firms activity. These commitments are very important to a company regardless of whether it is international or domestic in its activities. However, international companies have to deal with specific difficulties and requirements above and beyond those operating only in local markets.
