Personal Ethics Development Paper PHL 323 Ethics in Management Personal Ethics Development Personal ethics develop as part of the myriad of influences an individual is exposed to over the course of their lifetime. Personal ethics are basic principles and values that govern interactions among individuals, these basic principles can affect all areas of life, including family, finances, and relationships. Sound personal ethics are typically those that positively impact the experience of others when used to govern an individual's social or business related behavior, and at the very least, such ethics should not have a negative impact on others. Although experts disagree on where personal ethics originate from, many believe that man’s sense of morality comes from a divine source and serves as proof of the existence of God and the basic universal system of right and wrong. Key Terms Character plays a vital role in an individual’s personal ethics. Character encompasses the moral actions based on duty-driven ethical principles. These include trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship (Josephson Institute, 2009). Personal ethics will most certainly be the core ingredient in a person’s ability to success determines the ethical business behavior, which is “behavior that is consistent with the principles, norms, and standards of business practice that have been agreed upon by society” (Trevino & Nelson, 2007, p. 19). In business there will be many times when an organization’s leadership will need to decide the culture and ethical dilemma procedures. Ethical dilemma are “situations concerning right and wrong where values are in conflict” either for the individual or for the organization (Trevino & Nelson, 2007, p. 3).
