It has been said that when hearing about depressing or sad things it makes others sad or depressed as well. So in a way a depressed person who reads this book can in fact become even more depressed. All in all this book adds to teen depression, adds to teenage pregnancy and adds to the usage of vulgar language amongst teens. This book should be taken out of the school curriculum to help make Americans young adults lifestyle more
Although many people are against that, others have felt it was right even necessary. Yes teens make mistakes and do unnecessary things, but treating them as adult’s isn’t the right thing to do. Juveniles shouldn’t be punished as adults, because they’re still maturing and still have the mind of a child. Teenagers often don’t have the mind of an adult, so why try them as one? In Adam Liptak’s article “ Locked Away Forever” published in The New York Times he tells us of the case of Joe Sullivan, who was charged with sexually
The victims of discriminatory abuse could get less favourable treatment than other people because they are different. Indicators that discriminatory abuse is taking place could be that the person withdraws themselves from society because they feel are being discriminated against, or the victim could become stressed due to getting less favourable treatment which could then lead to health issues such as lack of sleep or ulcers. Domestic Abuse This is when there is a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviour within a relationship through which the abuser seeks power over their victim, which also tends to get worse over time. The abuser is not always a partner; it could be an ex-partner or even family members, although it is only considered domestic abuse if the victim is over 16 years of age. The main indicators of domestic abuse could be that the victim has unexplained injuries that could have been done by the abuser.
Drug and alcohol abuse is strongly associated with abuse and neglect, someone who is addicted to drugs or alcohol is more likely to become an abuser than someone who does not have these problems. Someone may turn to alcohol or drugs to help them cope with stress but these substances make people let go of inhibitions and do things they may not normally do, doing things on impulse rather than thinking things through and thinking of the consequences. On the other hand someone who is addicted to drugs or alcohol but doesn’t have the money to get them may become aggressive and lash out and physically hurt close family members or they may steal from elderly relatives who can’t defend them leading to a financially abusive
Assignment 1: Discussion—Prescriptive and Descriptive Arguments Debra Crawford Argosy University Online February 3, 2012 Prescriptive Argument: I believe that we have a problem with underage drinking. I think that young adults have enough to deal with without alcohol. Nearly eight in 10 Americans oppose lowering the drinking age in all states to 18. Even among young adults, age 34 and under, 73 percent oppose allowing 18-, 19- and 20-year-olds to drink alcohol (Cohan J July2005). Therefore that is why the drinking age shouldn’t be lowered to less than 21 years of age.
I really didn’t too much think I was the peer pressure type of person until actually attending college. Peer pressure is one of those things that start in your younger teen years but not so much when you are older. The thing that different college adult students from those who jump right into the work force and other things of that nature, is that when on college campus there are little to no adult supervision with a lot of illegal things being down that no one knows about. Underage drinking and the usage of marijuana are the biggest 2 on most college campuses. Underage drinking also leads to many conflicts within our students, like minor rape issues and the use of violence when under the influence due to the short attention span caused by alcohol usage.
Leshner states, “As with many other brain diseases, addiction has embedded behavioral and social-context aspects that are important parts of the disorder itself” (Leshner). Recognizing addiction as a mental illness can help reduce the health and social costs that are directly related to treating addiction. Research has exposed that drug abuse is a severe health issue, as well as a social issue. Addicts become so obsessed with consuming the substance it causes their immune systems to shut down and causes the addict to be incapable of functioning properly in a social setting. Addiction has severe negative consequences affecting the addict’s mental and physical well being.
Low self-esteem not only influences dangerous activities such as alcohol consumption and domestic abuse, but also causes negative emotional reactions such as depression and shyness. Increasing the patient’s self-esteem seems a logical solution. However, Leary disagrees with this hypothesis. He argues that self-esteem merely measures and evaluates social interaction. He calls self-esteem, "the sociometer model."
At times, teens may be rejected and in order to feel accepted, they make bad decisions such as using drugs, drinking alcohol, cheating, and bullying. Trying so hard to fit in can lead someone to lower their self – esteem and feel like they’re being judged. The stress and difficulty of fitting in can cause them to hurt themselves to make the pain stop and can lead to cases of teen suicide. Teenagers such as those trying hard to fit in and who’s self – esteem are lowered need a place in Hawaii where they can be themselves and no one can judge them for who they
To me she is not sure of her research and cannot back up her claims if the law was changed back to MLDA-18. “Approximately three quarters of college students’ aged18-20 years drank alcohol in the past year, although they are less likely than their peers of legal drinking age to drink and to engage in binge drinking (Wechsler and Nelson, Jun 2010).” Binge drinking has increased heavily in the last decade often leading to serious harm or even death. This can all be avoided with educating our young adults and allowing them the choice to drink or not. This is often a sign of fraternity pledging and pranks that lead to young adults who do not have the education to know when to say when. “It is indisputable that a drinking age of 21 has had harmful effects on campus life: It has soured relations between students and police.
