A gutless fucking wonder!’ When Blacky explains to his father about the storm, Bob insults him rather than swallow his pride and takes his son’s advice on board. The relationship that is shared between Blacky and his father has negatively impacted Blacky’s self-esteem so much that it has led to him not having faith in his own father and to expect no support. During the novel, the desertion that Bob shows toward his son leads Blacky to be more independent, and he learns to expect no support from his father, as he cannot rely on Bob to look after him. The grand final, and Dumby Red’s funeral are examples of when Gary seeks his father’s input,
“Can I give it tomorrow sir?” (Narayan 374). This quote shows that Sekhar doesn’t want to tell his headmaster the truth about his music, because he does not want to hurt his feelings. By not exposing his opinion he is therefore protecting his headmaster, by not hurting his feelings. In “The Censors” Juan becomes a censor just so he send a letter to his friend Marianna. ”Thinking something might happen to Marianna, because of his letter” (Valenzuela 377).
He chose to no longer be a part of something that discouraged uniqueness. Sammy accepted the girls’ need to conform and supported them all the way, even if it meant letting down his parents and his manager, who happened to be a family friend. In the story Sammy’s fantasies reveal that he is simply bored while at work. He is stuck in this rut of his life, and craves some sort of change. Living this lifestyle would drive anyone to want to rebel against authority just to spice things up a bit.
For example when his aunt says, “Well he’d better smarten up if he knows what’s good for him” Pg (43), she is threatening him. Also his uncle says, “If he doesn’t, I know something that will smarten him”, which implies that his uncle disapproves of Teddy’s actions. Teddy responds by sulking and is reluctant to share his ideas with his aunt and uncle. For example, “He shrugged impatiently. I ain’t been doin nothin-just playin”, he told her sullenly” Pg (43), he is trying to forestall his uncle from finding out what he has been doing up in the attic.
No surprising twist at the end. ABUSE Book starts hinting problems between parents, at first appears to be verbal abuse until mid-story. (ma doesn’t get up one morning) This makes us think..hiding bruise, evidence of physical abuse. Paddy realizes it’s serious…he comes back from school and she is up so he thinks everything is
My brother and I stayed at my Grandpa’s house most of the time she was up there mostly only going home to sleep and get ready for school the next day, it was weird and confusing but my grandpa was good at getting our minds off of things and keeping our spirits up when he needed to. While my grandmother was in the hospital, my brother and I didn’t get to go see her, we were either too young to go in or my parents didn’t think we should see her that way, I can’t remember. When she finally came home, they said the disease was gone but she was still very sick. She looked completely different and she was very weak. They had started her on chemotherapy, and from what I understand
This echoes one of the themes of this novel—adolescent confusion on the way to the adult world and the pain of growing up. As what Holden did before, he alienated himself from the outside phony world so as to protect the inner fragile, confused self. He labelled people around him as phonies and morons but it never downed on him that he was also one of the phonies who would flatter someone on mouth but curse him in heart. He didn’t know what he wanted to get from the adult
Now I could play in person and not wonder around seeing people play in the television. When I got home I told my dad and he said he knew a little bit about soccer. He showed me many tricks and ways to kick the ball. The next day, I went with my friend to play soccer in the park. I would practice every day and for a long time.
The ‘disease’ causes him great embarrassment and discomfort when he is around people and his Mother’s attitude towards it doesn’t help him. Her voice repeatedly interrupts the narrative of the story. While on holiday with his friend Michael and his family, Neil feels like he has to hide his condition. Instead of having fun, Neil finds refuge with homeowner Mrs Wan (a former duchess) who encourages him to feel better about himself and he finally gains enough confidence to go with Michael and do the things that normal boys of his age do. In the opening paragraph of the story, the author makes it clear how much Neil depends on his mother.
He would like to go for a management job at work but feels like something is stopping him and he would also like to go out with his colleagues but feels that if he changed the day he sees his mother she would not understand. He would like to ask his girlfriend to marry him but is worried that she will say no and that he does not have much to offer her at present. He worries about what people think of him, even though he is a nice person who thinks about the feelings of others. The Initial Consultation During the first meeting with Mr X, I would be aiming to collect as much information about him as possible. I would ask about his health and any current medication.
