What Adolescents Miss When We Let Them Grow Up in Cyberspace By BRENT STAPLES y 10th-grade heartthrob was the daughter of a fearsome steelworker who struck terror into the hearts of 15-year-old boys. He made it his business to answer the telephone — and so always knew who was calling — and grumbled in the background when the conversation went on too long. Unable to make time by phone, the boy either gave up or appeared at the front door. This meant submitting to the intense scrutiny that the girl's father soon became known for. He greeted me with a crushing handshake, then leaned in close in a transparent attempt to find out whether I was one of those bad boys who smoked.
Everyman has turned his back on God and set his sights on things that are not deemed important at the time of reckoning. Death comes to order Everyman to his journey of reckoning, and Everyman wants to bring someone along. Now everyone else will begin to deceive Everyman. The second time we see deception in Everyman is when Everyman turns to his dearest friend, Fellowship for help. Fellowship sees Everyman troubled and informs them that he would be happy to help.
Whenever his dad got a yellow card from school informing about his absence, Sonny got punished; his dad would beat him as hard as he could. Sonny hated his dad so much that he wanted to kill that “evil mean man”. But, before he could do such a thing, he preferred to “cat out”, to escape from his dad for a few days. He slept in every comfortable place that he could find in the city and stayed there as long as he wanted to or until he got sent to the Children’s Center. When it came to winter, Sonny usually decided to stay home or stay in school to be warm.
He scares them into doing whatever he wants them to do. For example he tied Wilfred up in the hot sun for no reason, except that he was angry. “He got angry and made us tie Wilfred up He’s been tied up for hours, waiting−” (Golding, 176). This makes the boys not want to betray him or make him angry so they follow his orders. The boys don’t see it that way though; they think he’s a great Chief because he takes them hunting.
He voices his opinion on how high school was, how high school is now, and how it could make or break your next four years from all the upsets, hardships and bullying. Fifty years ago, things were way different than how they are today. Kids had to go to school and were respectful to their peers or they would get in a huge amount of trouble, kids were expected to help their parents around the house or does some yard work outside. Nowadays kids do nothing and expect so much in return. If they do not get what they want when they want it, usually they will pitch a fit or they will not speak to their parents and the end result of that situation is the kid ends up getting it.
These days the kids get time outs and the parents try talking to them as if they were mini adults and can understand and grasp exactly the point you are trying to get across to them. They can't! They say they do to get you to shut up, but they didn't understand a word you just said. Obviously the time outs and talking do not work because our kids just keep doing the same thing they got in trouble for over and over again and we keep asking ourselves why? Does he have ADD or ADHD?
Life of a student is a very stressful one, as you drag yourself to school around 7:40 you desperately try to find friends that have completed a large sum of the mound of homework we were given the day before. Everyone lines themselves in the hallways trying to urgently scribble down answers. It comes to a point when you don’t even care if they are right or wrong as long as there is something there. The bell becomes your enemy, it is the sound of, “your screwed, ” blaring through your ears. Everybody
