English A1 SL. Oral Paddy Clarke ha ha ha Irish novel by Roddy Doyle Background info Publication date 1993 Story about an Irish boy growing up in the 1960’s. He runs around with gang of friends who enjoy terrorizing the streets of Barrytown. They like to start fires, names in wet cement, harass elderly ladies… Book is told through his point of view, insecurities of Kevin the rest he keeps to himself. Story follows chronological order of event, begins at school year proceses over a second school year Most of the story is dialogue. Language used by characters is slang and dialect of irish. Dialogue captures how children talk to each other and the difference to how they talk to adults. The sections with the slang is spelt as how they would say it not the correct way Purpose of story is to show difficult life for adolescents, they think they understand things when they really don’t, This story crosses boundaries everywhere because everything that happens in this story is relatable Very smart only when he applies himself. More worried about keeping on the good side of his bff Kevin (leader of pack). Kevin=doles out punishment in their games, if you’re on his bad side you get the worst consequences. "There wasn't another Friday. We were all sick of being hit on the back with a poker by Kevin. He wouldn't take his turn. He had to be the high priest all the time." Page 133 Paddy picks on his bro Sinbad…when there are no other targets. Dialogue and actions build at the end, building with transformation of Paddy. No surprising twist at the end. ABUSE Book starts hinting problems between parents, at first appears to be verbal abuse until mid-story. (ma doesn’t get up one morning) This makes us think..hiding bruise, evidence of physical abuse. Paddy realizes it’s serious…he comes back from school and she is up so he thinks everything is
