Britton Ody Griffin AP Language Am Lit A August 6, 2013 Outliers In the beginning of the book Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell, the reader will learn the meaning of an outlier: something that is situated away from or classed differently from a main or related body. As the reader reads through the book, they come upon many different types of outliers and learn some very interesting and mind bobbling facts. I enjoyed the book very much and have noticed a few points from the book right in our own community. In the Outliers, Gladwell argues that there is no such thing as a self-made man, but in reality that’s not always the case, although sometimes a opportunity comes along, the person still has to make it work by themselves. Many Brazilians who end up making it to the professional soccer world start off in life with next to nothing; no money, no home, no food, shelter, etc. They have to push themselves to master the art of soccer to earn a life. They start off by just practicing with oranges and coconuts to develop their skills. My soccer coach was from Brazil and he would always tell my team that he as a child was very poor and would play with the neighbor kids on the beach with coconuts because they couldn’t afford to buy even a kick ball. In the Outliers, Borgenicht is a great example of a self made man. Borgenicht start with absolutely nothing, but pushed himself and created his own clothes to sell. Borgenicht didn’t have a family with a ton of money, nor did he have the best education, Borgenicht didn’t even really receive a opportunity, he made it himself. In this society we live in, social structure defiantly has a major role in education and success. A majority of the time, kids of higher echelon classes receive better education than the rest. This allows them to have a much larger gap of knowledge on lower classes allowing them to be more “wanted” by
