If your question is "Explore the way family relationships are presented in Romeo and Juliet" think what your answer is, boil it down to a single sentence and start with that. Start with an interesting positive statement - eg, "In Romeo and Juliet tensions within families are shown to be far greater than tensions between families." If the question is "How does Steinbeck create a distinctive sense of voice in Of Mice and Men?" you could begin with "Steinbeck creates a distinctive sense of voice by writing his novel like a play." Tip: if you had to describe your essay in a single sentence, what would that sentence be?
A novelist like John Steinbeck, uses words as pictures, creating images that run through a novel to add to the narrative strength and give the novel additional meaning. Both Misto and Steinbeck explore the themes of friendship – Misto in “The Shoe-Horn Sonata” and Steinbeck in his novel “Of Mice and Men.” While the medium is different, the writers’ objectives are the same; to create meaning on which the narrative hinges. Misto writes about two characters, Bridie and Sheila, old friends who meet again in the production of a documentary. Their friendship has been forged in the crucible of a POW camp during World War II, where they were both subject to the privations of their cruel Japanese captors. The two women are the only ones who appear on stage; thus reinforcing their relationship is the theme to be explored throughout the play.
Of Mice and Men Themes DREAMS In Of Mice and Men, dreams, hopes, and plans are the very foundation of what makes life worth living, but they are also double-edged. The closer one comes to fulfilling a dream, the closer one comes to potentially being disappointed. In this novella, dreams, hopes, and plans are not about realistic ambitions, but about finding a way to survive the Depression, even if it’s just filling your mind with visions that may not come true. Dreams don’t escape the general unhappy futility that seems to characterize this era of American history. Questions – 1.
Lesson plan / teacher’s notes Introduce the idea that Steinbeck uses images of darkness and light throughout his novella as a stylistic technique. 1) As pupils come into the classroom and settle down, give random students pieces of card with quotations/statements on them, as printed out below. Do not explain why they have been given them at this point. 2) When the pupils are ready to begin, give a short introduction about the use of light and darkness in the novel. Explain that it is not used by accident, but it is part of Steinbeck’s craft.
Of Mice and Men The book Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck uses imagery, dialog, and repetition to give the reader a sense of reality while reading it. Steinbeck tells a story of two men during the 1930’s, he shows the reader what it would be like to live there right now. One of the most used and important thing in Of Mice and Men would be imagery. Imagery is used throughout the pages, and the book even starts off with it. I would say that it is important, because it helps the reader imagine where Lennie and George are and the feeling there giving off.
Comparative Essay “You are required to write a comparative essay. You should compare the experiences of the outsider in the books ‘The Curious Incident’ and ‘Of Mice and Men’” In the two books, ‘The Curious Incident’ by Mark Haddon and ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck the feature of an ‘outsider’ can be discovered. Both books are skillful novels, which deal with the theme of `outsiders', that is, individuals who do not fit into the mainstream of society. This feature is shown in many different ways in both of the books, mostly in the two protagonists of the texts. The 15 year old Christopher Boone of ‘The Curious Incident’ suffers under the Asperger syndrome and therefore has a different perspective on life than normal people.
Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men in a play format, using a circular pattern of locales, dramatic format of setting description, condensed narration, dramatic lighting, and to connect his plot. Some readers feel that Of Mice and Men is so balanced and thoughtful in structure that the novel is a work of art. Other readers feel that the structure makes the book predictable, taking away from the reader's interest. (1) Circular Pattern of Locales Nevertheless, Steinbeck's novel easily translated to the stage, almost intact, because of his thoughtful craftsmanship. The locales are perfectly balanced in a circular pattern.
George and Lennie, Candy, and Crooks develop the theme of American Dream in the novella “Of Mice and Men”.
